During the golden age of HW boxing there was a period when Frazier beat Ali, Ali beat Foreman and Foreman beat Frazier. As of past weekend we have seen JDS beat Rothwell, who beat Overeem, who beat JDS. These fighter triangles fascinate me (and show why MMAth doesn't work), and I tried to think of some other examples.

Another I can think of was Penn beating Hughes, who then beat GSP, who then beat Penn. That one was short lived since in Penn's next fight Hughes beat him, but it was there.

What are some other MMA triangles which have occurred within a divisions top 10 that you guys can think of?

As always in those threads : Hughes beat Trigg in the first round twice, Trigg beat Hallman in the first round twice, Hallman beat Hughes in the first round twice.

Should have remembered that! Great example!

vitor-Weidman-Luke

cain-Jds-Werdum (I'm giving Cain the "W" over JDS)

Doerksen>Cote>MacDonald>Doerksen. It's not top 10, but.... all via Rear naked choke!!! (MacDonald tKo'd Doerksen in the UFC rematch)

OkamI > Lombard > Shields > Okami

Stann knocked out Leben Leben knocked out Wanderlei and Wanderlei knocked out Stann also I think Condit Diaz Lawlor I don't know if that counts with the big year difference between the Diaz Lawlor fights and the others

Matt Hamill wins vs Jones
Rampage wins vs Hamill
Jones wins vs Rampage

GOAT example and the destroyer of MMAth.

People need to look at the styles, not the names - the patterns become clearer.

Bisping Silva Sonnen
Duffy McGregor poirier
Pettis Melendez Guida

There are hundreds of them but one that always was one for me back in the day was

Wand > Rampage > Chuck > Wand

Wands MT (and Chutebox style MT in general along with their durability/recovery/rounded grappling) were bad matchups for Rampage. Rampage was obviously a bad matchup for Chuck. And even if they fought in their prime I think Chucks counterstriking and kickboxing + TDD wouldve been a tough fight for Wand to win

Maia Sonnen Marquardt
Condit McDonald Woodley
Brown Thompson Hendricks

I love these things.

mma maths doesn't take into account the up's and down's of a fighter's career for when these triangles happen, hendo belfort for example, were the 2 rematches even justified given how old hendo was and vitor being juiced to the gills? point is they don't take into account the many variables from fight to fight.

You are right about that. But everybody already knew that. MMAmath is still a lot of fun.
