I know some of us discussed this one a while back. It just came out this weekend and, based upon what I thought was an unusually strong trailer for a "faith-based movie," I decided to go ahead and check it out. Even as an agnostic, I thought it was pretty interesting. Beyond the relatively high production values and solid acting, I was impressed with how the film told a familiar story in an unfamiliar way (weaving biblical details into a fictional narrative).

The director is Kevin Reynolds, who also directed Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and The Count of Monte Cristo, which I think goes a long way in explaining the quality of this film.

All in all, I'd give it an 8/10. Surprisingly, even many mainstream critics have had positive things to say, which is rare for a religious movie:

For a film that could have easily become bogged down in Sunday School reverence, or culture-war opportunism, Risen presents an intriguing, oblique approach to a Bible movie. -- Bilge Ebiri, New York Magazine

Whatever your religious affiliation, you will come away thinking that if all this did actually happen, it probably happened something like this. -- Mark LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

What could have been a hammy, square affair quickly settles into an impressive political thriller/crime procedural that manages to respectfully present Jesus without becoming too preachy. -- Jonathan Hicknan, The Newnan Times Herald

The film made just over 11 million this weekend. That doesn't sound like much, but considering it only has a budget of $20M, it's not bad. In fact, apparently that's the fourth biggest opener of any faith-based film.

There are a bunch of the Christian movies being advertised right now. Is it common to give up secular entertainment for lent?

You're right it does look like an interesting movie.

What I appreciated most is that instead of just telling the same old story that's been told a hundred times, they did something new and fresh. It's not a straight-from-the-Bible tale, as I mentioned in the OP, but rather a fictional story that incorporates biblical stories and ideas into it. The main character for instance, Clavius, is totally a creation of the film's writers.

I actually liked it enough that I'll probably pick it up on Blu-Ray when it comes out.

I'll probably watch it down the road but it feels pretty terrible.

They actually did a television miniseries just recently that was exactly this story.

I'm not religious but will watch it when it hits Netflix.

I was never able to make it to a theater to see this.

I gotta see if I can buy this movie somewhere. I forgot about it and just remembered today that I wanted to see this.

You? Forget about a movie like this?

That doesn't sound like you, Rip. I figured you'd be handing out free copies on the street corner.

I just don't watch many movies.

Well give it a look. It's one of the few explicitly Christian movies that I feel is really well made. In an industry that's known for its sub-par products, it stands out.
