I know some of us discussed this one a while back. It just came out this weekend and, based upon what I thought was an unusually strong trailer for a "faith-based movie," I decided to go ahead and check it out. Even as an agnostic, I thought it was pretty interesting. Beyond the relatively high production values and solid acting, I was impressed with how the film told a familiar story in an unfamiliar way (weaving biblical details into a fictional narrative).
The director is Kevin Reynolds, who also directed Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and The Count of Monte Cristo, which I think goes a long way in explaining the quality of this film.
All in all, I'd give it an 8/10. Surprisingly, even many mainstream critics have had positive things to say, which is rare for a religious movie:
For a film that could have easily become bogged down in Sunday School reverence, or culture-war opportunism, Risen presents an intriguing, oblique approach to a Bible movie. -- Bilge Ebiri, New York Magazine
Whatever your religious affiliation, you will come away thinking that if all this did actually happen, it probably happened something like this. -- Mark LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle
What could have been a hammy, square affair quickly settles into an impressive political thriller/crime procedural that manages to respectfully present Jesus without becoming too preachy. -- Jonathan Hicknan, The Newnan Times Herald
