Noonan said he initially prepped for the role by studying real life serial killers, but found them so repellant he just decided to create his own version of Dollarhyde. Noonan said he played him as though he genuinely thought he was doing good by, "transforming" his victims into, "fuel". He took up bodybuilding and kept his distance from the rest of the cast as much as possible, even to the point of staying in different hotels.

On set, he would stay in his trailer until it was time to shoot a scene, often sitting in the dark to get into the correct mindset. He would only answer to his character's name, Francis, on set. This behaviour, along with his size, genuinely unnerved the cast and crew at some points.

On a lighter note, Dolarhyde's death scene involved him laying in a pool of blood that was made from, among other things, corny syrup. The scene took so long to shoot that Noonan ended up stuck to the floor!
