RIP Chris Cornell (death ruled suicide by hanging)

Why do so many talented people kill themselves ?

I never got that. They should be the happiest on Earth.
Is it drugs ?

I don't know anything about Ativan. I wonder if it would make a normal happy person suicidal, or if it only increases suicidal thoughts in those who are depressed to begin with.
I don't know much about Ativan, but from what I can gather, it's an anti-seizure and anxiety med, most take it for anxiety. Alcohol can cause very serious interactions. It's NOT for depression - it says those who have clinical depression should not take it, as it can cause severe side effects.

There could have been a situation where he was drinking and took too many, and all hell broke loose in his head. If he suffered from serious depression, then he should have been on another medication. There are other meds that can treat both anxiety and depression.

Totally different style of music (obviously,) ... but relevant

I loved Chris. He was my favorite singer/songwriter. I loved Soundgarden at 14 and out of all the bands Soundgarden carried me best into adulthood. 1/2 of what i listened to was Cornell/SG/Audioslave. I was and still am devistated.

These Benzos and pyscho-pharmaceuticals are VERY dangerous: school shootings, mothers chopping up their own kids, chimps ripping peoples faces off and loads of suicides attributed to being on and getting off these drugs.

The cause DISASSOCIATION with realty and Chris took twice more than prescribed -he did not have the right mind to think about his actions - these things really fuck up your mind and you lose touch with reality. Everyone was totally shocked.

Lol ok doc. I wasn't going to say anything but Ativan, when used properly is given as an adjunct to a less addictive anti-anxiety medication or antidepressant etc. Suicidal thoughts are typical within the FIRST TWO WEEKS of STARTING the medication. Unless this was his first time and he was transitioning into an antidepressant then I don't see the relation of Ativan giving him suicidal thoughts to the extreme of killing himself. Definitely reaching here making big pharma look like the culprit to disguise the ugliness of mental health and the reality we see through suicide.

So you know the cascade effect and have worked with Chris Cornell...

Most artists are incredibly flawed...thus their drive to express themselves in any medium...

Ill say this I have no clue what caused him to off himself, but anti depressants are horrible, drug dependency is horrible.

uh you defend Big Pharma, everyone with a sane mind knows Big Pharma is legalized drug dealing in a capitalistic society, they dont make money from curing people they make money from keeping you sick but temporary relief. they make billions upon billions on the comeback just like a crack dealer in the hood, ont difference is this is legal.

Many of those meds or blood pressure, cholesterol, depression have severe sides.

Those Benzos are fucking dangerous man, like he said when that woman gave it to that monkey and he ripped them up should tell you something. So many people get hooked on them and those painkiller meds.

Also if Chris was taking more than one that means he was already using them for a long time adding more can fuck you up, he was building that tolerance, its how many of these famous people OD look at Anna Nicole smith she had like so many Benzos in her body.

Yep, it's now known that he admitted to taking too many Ativan and was acting weird. His wife asked his security to check up on him. They had a conversation that seemed bizarre to her. Those medicines can cause severe suicide risk. It would make perfect sense that he had a bad reaction to Ativan and took his own life.

If the prescription says take, for instance, 1 to 2 pills every 6 hours, that's what you take. You don't take 5 or 10 to see if it will get you high. People have to be responsible with all prescription medications. Taken properly they can save lives. Taken in excess they can end lives.

When Prince died after taking excess pain medication, I recall politicians once again tried to get involved in people's private medical situations. There are politicians trying to tell doctors to whom they can prescribe pain medication, and the dose the politician feels is the correct therapeutic dose! The tragic part of this is that people who have a genuine need for pain medication sometimes can't get their doctor to prescribe it because the doctors are afraid to prescribe it and risk losing their medical licenses thanks to the irresponsible people and/or criminals who fake pain symptoms to get painkillers, and sell it to junkies or take it themselves in higher doses than prescribed to try to get a high from it and end up dying as a result. I have an 85 year old family member with stenosis and he had a very difficult time finding a doctor who would prescribe anything for the pain. It's unjustifiable to take away a mature, elderly man's right to get the medication he needs because some people choose to sell or abuse the medication; it's punishing the innocent for the actions of the guilty.

Not a fan of big pharma, but these medications save lives too. There are many people out there with anxiety and depression that are completely overwhelmed without medication. Not to mention those with bi-polar, schizophrenia etc. It's not as simple as all medication is good or bad.

Of course medications save lives and improve the quality of the lives of people suffering from various illnesses. If somebody is against pharmaceuticals they might as well be against the science of Western medicine. Just take a look at the life expectancies in countries who have Western medicine and compare it to the life expectancy of a place where people rely on witch doctors.

A lot of it is the lifestyle. These people are sometimes on the road, away from home 6 months or more out of the year. Then you have a situation where everybody wants to be your friend and they give you whatever you want. Or you take a 22 year old kid who has grown up in a middle class or lower home and give him a couple million dollars. He probably won't have the discipline to know how to spend it wisely and save what he should. Or you take a guy who is in his twenties, is a millionaire and one day his music is considered passe. He's not even thirty years old and he's obsolete. There's no more demand for his style of music anymore.

Of course plenty are very happy but you don't see their stories because bad news sells more, makes more money than success stories.

Very sad. Superb singer and lyricist, and along with Trent Reznor probably the best rock artist of the last 25 years IMO.

I just watched a program this week where Big Pharma was trying to get opioids allowed in some country for use by terminally ill cancer patients. Doctors wanted morphine which is fairly cheap but the pharmaceutical companies wanted to sell Oxycontin instead because they make a lot more money on it. The doctors were conflicted on supporting that.

They are only human after all. All the money, success and adulation in the world cannot bring one happiness. The Chris Cornells of the world are just as likely to be as predisposed to mental illness as us ornary folks, perhaps even more so. What drives them to achieve greatness can also be what drives them crazy. There is definite truth in the famous quote about the fine line between genius and insanity.

The problem is that the people receiving the medications are also those that are more likely to abuse them. The drugs might work wonders in a monitored clinical setting but giving a bottle of pills to someone with a mental problem is a bad idea.
