So the right hook I think is probably one of the more under utilized punches, but its an effective punch and plenty of fighters have used it well. Given that is somewhat overlooked i thought it would be a good idea to make a thread on them and get everyones input we all probably learn a thing or two.

what is your target point for the Right hook? What do you think of kidney punching?

I don’t invest much in an actual right hook. I more get loopy with my right when it needs to be or when I am trying to punch around a guard.
It is great for punching at the body on ortho vs ortho. Or taking an outside angle against a southie

I will always love the way Mike Tyson and Roy Jones throw the Right Hook punch left and right to the kidney or in-close to the jaw. The kidney shot with enough penetrating force in the correct spot is deadly muck like a K.O.

Perfect!

But lets not forget where the power is coming from straight up from the foot work, twist and through the hips out through the punch!

Just love it, I could watch Tyson forever amazing fighter perfect technique!

Not much use on my end. When I have a right kick, knee, and elbow, a right hook pales in comparison

It is nice to have in arsenal well trained hooks with both hands.
Usage depends from obstacles and hooks might be delivered from different angles. Up, linear angled and down angled.
There also even if punched blocking hand and it isn't counted, this effect might accumulate enough to slow down this hand's speed in next rounds.

A short right hook to the body can be useful, right hooks in an orthodox Vs orthodox match can leave you exposed to nasty counters.........

You say that but I was able to break someone's rib with a well placed right hook, without much effort during sparing, it wasn't intentional and my training partner didn't know it till the next morning, sometimes it's not the power you can generate but how you can place the strike.

I like to use it with a step back for fighters that blindly rush in or that you can really get their timing down. If timed correctly you can inflict real damage. I'm not good enough to go forward with one from a traditional stance but one of my previous training partners was excellent at it. He's a top notch wrestler so he'd fire a high jab while lowering his body level (fainting a shot) to cover his step forward switch stance at which point he'd pop up in range blasting that right hook. Won 2 MMA fights via knockout with it.

Fuck I hate lose leg kicks to the head... just ruthless

so I am wondering about placement of the right hook than because I have used the right hook in fights that were powerful clean shots, but they did not have the same effect on the guy as getting hit in the liver, but I have been hit in the kidney in sparring and it was painful similar to a liver shot. I guess you have to hit the back of the kidney, but thats an illegal shot?

They are illegal (at least I thought they were)
What do I know I am just your average groundhog expert. I fill locations with uppercuts whose to say if kidneys get touched or not.

I'm a tall guy who uses his range. So if I'm in hooking range I'm doing something wrong.

When someone closes the distance my go to is the left hook or right uppercut.

That said I'll use a more ranged right hook when my opponent gets desperate and aggressively circles to my right trying to close the distance. Usually they will jump and try to land a big hand. I basically put my right hook out and they run into it. Same can be done on the left too.

That’s legit I used to train with a lanky southie and he would sting me like that with his left hook, when I got antsy or just tried to storm in on him.

For you it would very much be in clinch range for your opponent, better to use it against guys that just kick box with bad clinch work, then go to work in the clinch.

yeah so how can we be kidney punching if kidney punches are illegal? I think it means punching the kidney from the back, like attacking a opponent from the back. I think if you can punch the kidney by looping the punch around would be sort of a grey area? Or totally legal?

Lets find ways we can target the kidney more while remaining legal or "gray area", punching someone in the Right side of the body definitely does not have the same effect as hitting the back of the kidney by looping or cutting angle.

Basically I was sitting there like, how can I make my Right Body punches more effective? Better to target the kidney rather than the body. How can I target the kidney better? A big clean Right hook to the body wont drop a guy, but a big clean Right hook to the kidney will.

I have landed the right hook to the body and head in probably everyone of my fights, but never had the Right hook to the body cause the same amount of damage as a liver punch, so I figure I need to target the kidney better. How can we rip the kidney better? I am thinking I should be trying to have my punch loop around a bit or something.

Typically my right hooks have been targeted and landing on the Right side of the body, im sure they hurt but didnt put anyone down, however I think a clean shot to the kidney would. take a look at my punch placement.

Kidney punches are illegal in boxing. A hard blow to a kidney can bruise or cut the organ, or even tear it loose from the blood vessels that supply it. Damage can range from mild pain to blood in the urine to anemia, kidney failure, shock and even death. That's why the rules of boxing, which generally prohibit any punch to the back, pay special attention to the kidney area.

Battling Mike Tyson would be like battling the proverbial 800lb gorilla.

Make a serious boxing mistake, like in both your gifs, and you're dead.

You need to move to your right more (as per the pic) hook needs to be placed almost as if it's part hook part upper cut and land coming up and round into the floating rib, you need to look more at the structure of the human anatomy to give you more info as to what does damage more.

Partner drills, take it very light and practice placement of the punch, be honest with each other and give indication of effective placement of the punch.
