Rickson Gracie FAQ

you really need to realise that 10thpjj is just bjj dude, its not some new way of grappling, its just eddies game mapped out into a 'system'

Dude ur really going to ruin this thread with bring up Eddie. I've never said that 10th pjj is a whole new system. Of course I know it's bjj but different is that it's no-gi. So I don't know were your coming up with this.

where i come from is you referrring to it as going back to 'old school bjj' like there is a new way of doing it, bjj is a constantly evolving and growing martial art that incroporates anything that works, it was when rickson was young and rolls was pushing limits and it is now while guys like mendes, cobrinha and marcelo are doing the same

Yeah but rickson would never start a new student doing nogi he would have them work with a gi. That's what I meant and if u ask some people they will tell you that nogi is a new way of training and if brazilians were cool with that then they wouldn't have a problem with Eddie.

gi training produces better grapplers for nogi, check adcc results for proof

most brazilian jiujitsu instructors in brazil don't know who eddie is nor would they care

it is sacreligious to mention eddie in a rickson thread, it's like mentioning kimbo slice in a discussion of pound for pound greats.

How good was Rorion compared to the rest of his brothers? Is his bjj skills just average or is he really good like his sons? All three of his sons are very good bjj players.

Rorion was obviously "very good" but never to the level that Rickson, Relson, or Royler were. (Royce wasn't actually considered more than an "average" black belt in BJJ circles...if such a thing as "average" black belt exists.) In fact they said that Rickson was the one you never wanted to see waiting for you on the mat...but Relson was the one you never wanted to see waiting for you outside the bar! I have been told, however, that Rorion also had a LOT of injury issues that never let him reach his true potential. He is, however, one hell of a teacher from what I hear.

Man, I refused to read this thread for awhile thinking this was gonna be another lame Rickson thread...but wow...thanks for all the info!

You wouldn't happen to have any stories about Rolls would you?

Rolls is a legend. He was the one who started bringing in other aspects of grappling like Judo and American wrestling and sambo and the like. He was said to be on even another level than Rickson. Truly a tragedy.

What fight was it where he used the superman?
Koichiro Kimura (no relation that I know of to the great Kimura?) in Vale Tudo Japan '95

Excellent reading!. About Rorion, I remember once that Relson told us he's always had a bad injury in one of his shoulders.
Also, that when they used to roll, Rickson could never ever pass Relson's guard. But then again, Relson is a few years older than Rickson, and even to this day still refers to him as "my little brother Rickson".

they have been training no gi for years. Heck Carlson fought without a gi.

Let us not discusse 10th Planet or anything else not related to Rickson in this thread. To end the topic I'll just say that 10th Planet is NOT original Gracie Jiu Jitsu, as it does not include in its curriculum basic and necessary techniques for the application of jiu jitsu as a self-defense art, including but not limited to: elbows, knees, stomps to body and knees, etcetera.

In their defense, very few schools still teach that, as Gracie Jiu Jitsu slowly loses space to sport and MMA-oriented Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Great great thread. I have heard stories like these over dinner with master sauer and they never cease to amaze me

I never said the gi is a bad thing if that's what ur into then great. Stop drinking the Koolaid you really believe that ppl don't know who Eddie is in Brasil ? That's why they dogged him at the adcc and you don't think people are going to remember the dude who tap the great royler. I know u don't like Eddie or his jiu jits su but drinking the koolaid bro your embrassing yourself.

And again let me say so thAt you can understand I have nothing against the gi I started out in the gi, when I lived in London I train at Roger Gracie school and I respect the gi very much. But I feel there's more out there then just the gi and I like Eddie as am instructor.

I just want to say that I respect your thread and I wouldn't do anything to sabatoge it. I never wanted to talk about 10th planet I wanted to keep it all about rickson. But then comes alOng this dude that just starts attacking me just because I like like training without the gi. I won't talk about 10th any more on this thread as respect to you and your research.

This thread also tells you much on Rickson's skill level. Some BJJ black belt rolled with big Nog, Anderson Silva & also Rickson... very interesting read.

Second only to Rickson.

I trained with Rickson in '97 when I was a blue belt. He rolled with everyone at the Pedro Sauer school in SLC. The first guy he let start mounted, with Rickson's hands in his belt. Rickson shrimped into guard, and subbed him with triangle, all in about 20 seconds, with no hands! The guy was fighting like crazy. Then I volunteered, (he used his hands). He subbed me and everyone else in the room, including Blackbelt Pedro Sauer, with almost zero effort. It was amazing.

The no-hands thing is interesting. I have seen Shane Rice do that in training.

Thank you. There is a lot of information and gossip about his life that is now well-known in Brazil thanks to Reila Gracie's extremely-well-documented biography of her father Carlos Gracie, published in 2008. I chose not to publish many of those things here because they had little to do with his career but since they are now public knowledge, I'm beginning to think that posting some facts up will help avoid the second-hand distortions that tend to happen.

Reila Gracie is daughter of Carlos, wife of Mauricio Gomes (one of Rolls's select few black belts and close friends) and mother of Roger Gracie, the current family champion. Her book pissed a lot of people off.

Unbelievable thread. Sticky-worthy IMO. Seriously, Donkey Kong, you should write a book - even an e-book or something. The people who know all these stories won't live forever and these stories are worth knowing for future generations of jiu jitsu players.

As a old school, gi wearing, choke 'n' armlock guy like myself, I can't get enough of this kind of thing. Top notch!

BTW - and speaking of books - what is your opinion of the book about Carlos? Worth picking up a copy?
