Rickson Gracie Article by Maynard Keenan

Is there any scientific backing for the food combination claims made by the Gracies?

No, it's superstitious BS. Carlos was a pretty out there guy in many way, the Peruvian spirit thing being just one good example. But eating a lot of fruit and meat and limiting dairy and carb intake isn't a bad idea, so the diet more or less works despite itself.

Lol, of course not.

Three things: First, your mouth doesn't produce different types of acids for digesting different foods. It produces saliva to aid in the digestive process, and saliva is just very mildly acidic. Second, the Gracie diet basically works out to be a low carb diet with some inane avoidance of pork. Low carb with sufficient protein tends to work well for humans regardless of any mysticism you surround it with. Lastly, having a diet that says acidic fruits do not digest properly with absolutely anything else edible, including other fruits is pants-on-head idiocy.

The Gracie's know grappling, not science.
