Getting significantly bigger and more muscular while not planning to use that in an unrelated sport seems like a valid definition of bodybuilding. He's not a competitive bodybuilder, but that's what he's doing.

Well that's not what bodybuilding is.
Bodybuilding is lifting and training for appearance as opposed to strength or other goals. You can't just look at someone's physique and say "oh he's a bodybuilder." Hell, he could even be doing a "bodybuilding routine" and taking all the same special sups and vitamins as the best body builders in the world but that doesn't make him a bodybuilder. Being a bodybuilder is all about WHY you built/are building the muscle--for appearance.

Some people work out because they enjoy working out and feeling strong.
