Some preliminary notes:

The fight took place at high altitude, in Denver, Colorado.
It happened at the time when Mark Hunt improved his submission defence, but didn't improve enough his TDD.
Prior to it, Ben Rothwell fought Gilbert Yvel who he basically held down for 15 minutes.

Gameplans:

Rothwell - repeat Yvel fight, hold Hunt down
Hunt - stand and bang

First round was going at a high pace. Rothwell was striking just enough to set up takedowns. Hunt stuffed some of them, but was taken down nevertheless. Neither man showed any signs of gassing.

Second round saw the shifting of momentum. Something happened with Rothwell. He suddenly started to move slower and didn't seem to have the same power in his strikes and in his takedowns. Hunt actually felt tired too, because instead of punishing an easy target he switched to wrestling himself. Hunt basically spent half of a round in Rothwell's guard battering the giant with short shots. Rothwell was so exhausted that Hunt almost submitted him with an armbar!

Third round initially fit the same narrative. Rothwell was moving forward like a zombie. Hunt snarled at him with single shots and occasionally shot for takedowns. At one point Rothwell literally stood near the fence with his hands down inviting Hunt to engage. So it was going, until the last 30 seconds. Hunt shot for a takedown yet again, Rothwell sprawled. Then he grabbed Hunt's neck in a very familiar manner. I think he was trying to perform his patended gogo choke, just didn't have the energy to complete it. He abandoned the choke and spun around to force Hunt into flopping to his back. Seemed like Rothwell found the energy out of nowhere... but the round ended.

Thoughts:

Rothwell was doing OK, until he gassed hard. His gassing can be attributed to high altitude combined with a lot of wrestling which isn't his preferred area of fighting. Hunt learned from the fight and improved his TDD defence.

I hope, the myth of Rothwell non-existent cardio can be put to rest. He is fine unless he's dragged into prolonged wrestling or clinch battles.

they both got better after that fight

This fight was where I started to believe that Hunt had rediscovered his love for fighting and wasn't just going through the motions to collect a paycheck. He was training at ATT, had shed a ton of excess fat, and showed the kind of skills he hadn't shown in years, if ever. Don't forget he was only two fights removed from getting subbed by Sean McCorkle. Yeah... Sean... McCorkle... He'd go on to decapitate Kongo, Struve, and many others and it was awesome to watch. He never beat any truly elite fighters of his day, but the guy was so much better than his record would suggest. Also, prime Hunt beats Ngannou. *ducks*

As for Big Ben... I've never seen a human being be that tired and not die. HW fights and altitude are a frightening combo.

I recently watched Hunt vs Black Beast. I think it was Hunt's last win. Hunt's bull rushing to close the distance and clobber style really was tough for Derrick to deal with..but at this point Hunt is old,and he didnt really get going until the fight ended in i think the 3rd rd. He basically chipped away at Derrick until he finally hurt him and he finished him off.

mark hunt lost a boxing match to a rugby player rip

I was there for that match. It was quite forgettable to the point where I didn't even know Mark Hunt was due to fight until he started walking out

You forgot to emphasize: Big Ben lost!

anyway big props to him for still being a winning fighter in the modern day ufc. After a defeat to an already past his prime Mark Hunt a lot of people were writing off Ben

I mean after his losses to Hunt and Gonzaga, with a victory over Schaub in between.. he went on the best streak of his career.

Knocking out Reem and subbing Barnett is no mean feat.

:D

Black Beast had severe back problems at that time, which he has officially got fixed just before the DC fight I believe or after.

Hunt's one of my favourite fighters so very happy he won, but he beat a Lewis that was nowhere near 100%.

Lewis has suffered through back problems for a big part of his UFC career and as bad as things were ahead of his matchup with Werdum, it turns out he was in worse shape inside the cage when staring down knockout artist Mark Hunt in June 2017.

“The worst was still in the Mark Hunt fight. In the second [round], that’s when the back was kicking my butt. I just had to go forward. I couldn’t even go side to side,” Lewis revealed when speaking to MMAWeekly.

“There’s nothing you can really do but stand there. At the end of the Mark Hunt fight, all I could do is stand there. I couldn’t move any more.”

The back pain flared up again ahead of the fight with Werdum and Lewis actually had to be taken out in a wheelchair thanks to the severe pain he was suffering from at the time. According to Lewis it took him two days to start feeling normal again, which only further explains just how bad this back injury has gotten in recent years.

Lewis says that he’s visited numerous doctors to examine his back and they have told him surgery is an option, but even that’s not a guarantee to fix the problem.

“They say you can fix it with surgery but it’s really muscular. It’s nothing like torn ligaments or spinal, everything is all muscular. They say that really stretching and getting deep tissue massages and stuff like that will really help it,” Lewis explained.

“I’ve got to stretch my ass off. I really don’t stretch much so lately I’ve been doing a lot of stretching so it’s been helping a lot.”

Lewis’ well documented back problems even earned him a call from former professional wrestler “Diamond” Dallas Page, who reinvented himself in recent years as a yoga guru. Thanks to decades spent in the wrestling ring where athletes abuse their bodies upwards of 300 nights per year, Page found that yoga was a key in helping him regain mobility and get rid of so many daily aches and pains.

Hunt was an unforgiving matchup for Derrick even then though, he still wasn't as shot as he was by the time Oleinik dropped him and stuff.

Lewis has issues with better strikers which is why he lost to JDS like that, does have that great equalizer in the form of a right handed bomb, but he's better off picking on grapplers as opposed to strikers.

It's not like hunt doesn't have ko power to ko anyone in any shape .

If he was with back problem, then why he power kicks hunto like a mad man all the fight? imo he injury his back power kicking mark hunt for some reason. Imo Mark Hunt is just a bad matchup for slow heavy strikers like Lewis, hunt was just technically superior.
