Retreating in MMA

    It seems like the most popular striking defense in mma is using range.

    What is the proper technique for retreating in MMA? Is it similar to boxing where you take move backward and circle to the side at the same time? I know there is the old saying that you never want to move straight backward.

    How do you retreat and circle toward your lead hand? Do you step backward with your lead foot and then circle the same as you would orthodox?
