Remember when Fitch stole a win from BJ Penn!?

149 “strikes” and BJ wasn’t close to getting knocked out. Shows the quality of the strikes. Lay and pray. 10-9.
Too bad that isn't how the scoring system works. You can't spend an entire round eating punches in the guard and earn nine points. Ten eights aren't only for massive damage inflicted.

If you mount no offense of any kind in the round according to the scoring criteria it's an automatic ten eight.

Going by the scoring criteria the 3rd round could very easily be a 10-7.

That round fits the definition of a 10-7 perfectly. BJ did (almost literally) nothing in that round.
  1. All bouts will be evaluated and scored by 3 judges who shall evaluate the contest from different location around the ring/fighting area. The referee may not be one of the 3 judges.
  2. The 10-Point Must System will be the standard system of scoring a bout. Under the 10-Point Must Scoring System, 10 points must be awarded to the winner of the round and 9 points or less must be awarded to the loser, except for a rare even round, which is scored (10-10).
  3. Judges shall evaluate mixed martial arts techniques, such as effective striking, effective grappling, control of the ring/fighting area, effective aggressiveness and defense.
  4. Evaluations shall be made in the order in which the techniques appear in (c) above, giving the most weight in scoring to effective striking, effective grappling, control of the fighting area and effective aggressiveness and defense.
  5. Effective striking is judged by determining the total number of legal strikes landed by a contestant.
  6. Effective grappling is judged by considering the amount of successful executions of a legal takedown and reversals. Examples of factors to consider are take downs from standing position to mount position, passing the guard to mount position, and bottom position fighters using an active threatening guard.
  7. Fighting area control is judged by determining who is dictating the pace, location and position of the bout. Examples of factors to consider are countering a grappler's attempt at takedown by remaining standing and legally striking, taking down an opponent to force a ground fight, creating threatening submission attempts, passing the guard to achieve mount, and creating striking opportunities.
  8. Effective aggressiveness means moving forward and landing a legal strike.
  9. Effective defense means avoiding being struck, taken down or reversed while countering with offensive attacks.
  10. The following objective scoring criteria shall be utilized by the judges when scoring a round:
    1. a round is to be scored as a 10-10 round when both contestants appear to be fighting evenly and neither contestant shows clear dominance in a round;
    2. a round is to be scored as a 10-9 round when a contestant wins by a close margin, landing the greater number of effective legal strikes, grappling and other maneuvers;
    3. a round is to be scored as a 10-8 round when a contestant overwhelmingly dominates by striking or grappling in a round.
    4. a round is to be scored as a 10-7 round when a contestant totally dominates by striking or grappling in a round.
  11. Judges shall use a sliding scale and recognize the length of time the fighters are either standing or on the ground, as follows:
    1. if the mixed martial artists spent a majority of a round on the canvas, then:
      1. Effective grappling is weighed first; and
      2. Effective striking is then weighed
    2. If the mixed martial artists spent a majority of a round standing, then:
      1. Effective striking is weighed first; and
      2. Effective grappling is then weighed
    3. A round is to be scored as a 10-8 round when a contestant overwhelmingly dominates by striking or grappling in a round.
    4. If a round ends with a relatively even amount of standing and canvas fighting, striking and grappling are weighed equally.

I personally would give it a 10-8, but if anyone was robbed of a win by judges it wasn't BJ.

You misunderstood what I said.

I was saying that Thatch over Henderson when you looked at them both gave me an unnerving feeling, much like Penn and Fitch, mainly because of the vast difference in size.

You are correct that Henderson beat Thatch, and in my opinion Penn beat Fitch also.

Ahh i get you ...yea i personally dont know how thatch makes 170 and keeps that much size..fitch is just tall and lean..but thatch is something else..he makes fitch look small too lol impressive though what henderson did..and ill have to rewatch penn vs fitch today to try understand your argument but if i remember correctly bj penn faded hard in the 3rd and frustrating to see as bj penn fan myself..but ill watch it again and comment back here

This fight reminds me of Mousasi vs Jardine.

I remember when BJ ducked Siver and fought Sanchez instead because he didnt want to lose his belt.

A draw was the right score and if anyone got robbed it was Fitch

nobody forgets that Fitch was a top welterweight, it's actually the only thing most people remember about him.

BJ Penn was not a victim of his own bravery, he was a victim of his own ego. He was a very talented fighter, but never dedicated himself to be as great as he wanted to be.

And Fitch set a record for strikes in that 3rd round, he didn't just lay on BJ, he beat the crap out of him because BJ was dead after the 2nd round.

Fitch was boring but he had a stranglehold on the #2 spot at WW for a while.
Fitch was fighting all the hitters and doing all of GSP’s dirty work. The road to the title went through Fitch for a good while.

BJ’s gas tank had never been elite

Note that the people saying BJ should have won don't remember what really happened and have rewritten the third round (and much of the 2nd) to fit their agenda.

BJ won round 1 easy.
BJ hit a TD in round 2 but did nothing of significance with it, Fitch didn't do anything amazing either.

Fitch dominated round three and landed over 100 strikes, BJ did nothing but lay there and take a beating, he was totally gassed and useless.

28-28 is the most reasonable score, but giving either guy 29-28 is somewhat understandable (especially if you believe that at that time a 10-8 should only be given in life threatening situations.)

No robbery, not even close, and BJ is the only person to blame for his inability to capitalize on his insane skill set due to HIS OWN LAZINESS.

From memory I think I had that fight for Fitch 29-28. Round 1 10-9 BJ, round 2 10-10 draw and round 3 10-8 Fitch. It’s been a long time since I saw it though.

I remember scoring this for Fitch but I was also probably pretty drunk at the time and I have not rewatched.

That last round was a 10-7 if Fitch was someone else. He's pillow fisted so it's a 10-8.
