Check out Gomi's fight record some time. He wasn't that good. Thus: I am not eempressed with hees peformance

That silver spoon made him soft, he never stood a chance
This. And the fact he is in such an enclosed environment on the big island with yes men who hes surrounded by. Spoiled rotten. Fighting was his hobby. He didnt need it to live. Not to say he didnt work hard or that he isnt a natural born fighter....but peeps who struggle in the hood and become fighters whether they are boxers or mma fighters, have a different mentality and a hunger that drives them to succeed. BJ was one of the GOAT lightweights WITHOUT A strong work ethic. Imagine if he had been at ATT? Man he could have been one of the GOAT pound for pound and not just at lightweight.

Look at the cardio

Gomi had nothing left when it got to the third and BJ came out on fire

When BJ's cardio was on point he was a tough night for any man on earth

When it wasn't, he had about 5 minutes in him before he became a punching bag
Also, without cardio he can't grapple, so he becomes a plodding boxer. Not as effective as having a full game. Like with Florian fight, he showed all aspects and then tapped Florian later in the fight. Stevenson also. All around game shown.

Definitely

He's been flat footed boxer Penn for so long people forget that BJ's ground game was where he shined at his peak

Even when he was fading, he won grappling exchanges with Diaz and Fitch early in those fights. He just emptied his limited gas tank in the process and spent the rest of both fights getting beat on pretty horribly

If his S&C was up to par like many other fighters and didn't fatten his way up in weight just to fight bigger guys I think BJ could have definitely been the undisputed LW GOAT. I think that was his biggest weakness and as he fell out of his prime everything else just fell apart, especially as the game evolved.

People think he's a great boxer but I don't agree. Like you said, he was best taking people to the ground with GnP

You can see thats the major difference now. He chooses to stand up a lot now rather than the aggressive takedowns.

Whu happened? Whats most impressive are the 2 leg take downs. Especially against a wrestler like Gomi. The style is what set him apart.

Fights nothing like this now. Anyways, shows what a legend used to be.

Gomi lookin jacked in the promo...

Good god... The mauling of Joe Stevenson...

I remember thinking BJ should win with relative no issues... But that Joe was peaking as a fighter,
May end up being hard to put away, etc...

BJ just absolutely Mollywhopped him...

I don’t normally like to say things like this.. But Stevenson didn’t belong in the cage with BJ... They were light years apart in skill...

I loved BJ Penn but HONESTLY ... Gomi and Penn in that fight would be murdered by every top ten LW today.

Sloppy winging punches from both.
Sloppy shoot in.

This match shows that the game has evolved.

Again ... huge BJ fan fan from when he was a champ.

GoMi certainly overrated but I doubt the class would run right thru Penn. and his punching is way above average.

Time happened
yes, time happened 10 years ago. the reality is that BJ Penn was the biggest hype train ever. his prime years were shorten than the shelf life of a yogurt on a picnic bench in the hot Hawaiian sun.

Gomi is definitely one of the most overrated fighters ever if not the most. People just love Asian fighters for whatever reason.
