Remakes

Good one: True Grit

Bad one: Psycho (1998), just a shot-for shot remake of the original only with Vince Vaughn

Interesting one: Man Who Knew too Much (1934/1958). Alfred Hitchcock remakes his own film shot for shot, scene for scene, only with a different cast

Note: Star Wars: A New Hope was heavily influenced and some-what based on The Hidden Fortress, a 1950's Japanese film

Good remakes IMO:

Cape fear
The departed
Resovouir dogs
3.10 to Yuma ( didnt realise that was a remake until this thread)
True grit
Heat
The thing (1980s not the prequal)
Halloween
12 monkeys
Man on fire

Haven't seen the remake of let the right one in but I have heard good things, I loved the original.

The remake of the ring was ok IMO

That is interesting. I haven't seen The Hidden Fortress yet, but I will soon get around to it. Kurosawa has really made a lot of groundbreaking movies.

Resovouir dogs
12 monkeys

Are you saying that the 1992 version is a remake?
It is inspired a little by "The Killing", and share some similarities with "City on Fire". But it is not a remake.

Or are you saying that you like the 2002 Bollywood remake "Kaante"?

I wouldn't really count 12 Monkeys as a remake either.

I was thinking in terms of city on fire as for twelve monkeys I think it is considered by many to be a remake

Agree with Dawn of the Dead as well

While not a direct remake, the John Carpenter's 1982 The Thing is an adaption of the 1950's film, "The Thing From Another World" and a novel.

Again, not a direct remake, but it is a non-conventional remake of the 1932 film of the same name

I respectfully disagree. I thought the American remake was total shit.

EDIT: compared to the original.

I think the original was better, but the remake is almost identical scene for scene. I don't see how you could feel it is that much worse than the original.

The only reason it is considered that is because the director said he was inspired by the french movie "La Jet

Source Material: Les Liaiasons Dangereuses

Hollywood original: Dangerous Liaisons (1988)

Hollywood remake: Cruel Intentions (1999)

HK made: Wi-heom-han gyan-gye (Dangerous Liasons) (2012)

reservoir dogs and fistful are rip-offs, not remakes

I disagree with Reservoir Dogs being a rip off. City On Fire deals with the events leading up to a robbery, Reservoir Dogs got completely different characters and is dealing with the aftermath of a robbery. There is a lot of similarities, but I wouldn't call it a rip-off.

I included Fistful because the story line is exactly the same, just taking place in a different environment.

Decent
