This thread is dedicated to remakes.
We all know that Hollywood loves remaking foreign movies, and re-booting old Hollywood productions. Sometimes it sends you into a severe state of depression, and sometimes it is actually good, or perhaps even better.

I want you to rate some of the remakes/re-boots you have seen, and how they compare to the original.
I will start:

Good remakes:

Originally from China (Hong Kong)
VS

Both are great movies, and bring something unique to table.
Infernal Affiars is a trilogy, and you will get a lot more involved in the character development and back story, when you have seen them all (the 2 other movies are prequels).
The Departed got Scorsese, and amazing dialogue.
Both versions got great acting, but the Departed takes the cake with Baldwin, Wahlberg. Nicholson and Dicaprio all giving amazing performances.
Both versions are very good.

Originally from Japan

VS

Here is a case of a remake that just copies the plot, but puts it into a whole new environment.
A Fistful of Dollars redefined the western genre. Yojimbo is a masterpiece.
Like most of Kurosawa's other work, one should be very cautious about remaking it. Most of his movies are regarded as flawless masterpieces and you can be certain that almost everyone will be extremely skeptical.
But the remake was done in such an original way while creating a very good movie in its own right, so I think it serves as a prime example of how a remake should be done.

Bad remakes

Originally from S.Korea
VS

A Tale of Two Sisters is to The Uninvited what Mozart is to Lil'Wayne.
I will quote some IMDB users that seems to share my feelings:
A Tale of Two Sisters is an actual piece of quality cinema. The Uninvited is a hack-job made for teenagers
Janghwa, Hongryeon is better cast, better written, better directed, well.. just better.
The remake was so badly acted it looked like a school play, the dialogue was terrible, and was dumbed down beyond belief.

A Tale of Two Sisters is an excellent film, and The Univited lacks the ambience and emotion of A Tale of Two Sisters. I felt crushed for Soo-mi at the end of A Tale of Two Sisters, but I was pretty much emotionally uninvolved at the end of The Uninvited.

Originally from Denmark

VS

I will admit it is a long time ago I watched either movie, but I remember the key reaons.
The Danish version creeped me out, the US version bored me.
I liked Kim Bodnia's portrail of Jens over Josh Brolin's James. James is too nice, you don't get how he can push Martin into all those crazy dares.
There is also some serious plot holes in the US version e.g. the sex scene in the morgue was cut from the US version.
I guess the sex scene in the morgue was too much for the american audience, but not including it removes an important logical element of the story.
The police later finds his semen in the morgue, that connects him to a murder. In the US version it is not expained how his semen ended there in the first place

remakes of Asian horror movies in general are terrible.

The Eye, Shutter, and The Grudge (Ju On), and One Missed Call being examples.

Dawn of the Dead

Tron Legacy isn't really a remake per se, but it's one of the first movies that spring to my mind when I think of quality re-boots.

Dawn of the dead remake was pretty good.Cape Fear remake was creepy as hell. The Thing prequel was ok.The tone was pretty damn good, but they should of kept it like the original:Only norweigan characters with no americans or women.

Bad Remakes:The honeymooners, total recall, rollerball, godzilla.there's more but forgot most of them, just like the audience did at the box office.

Agree with Dawn of the Dead as well

While not a direct remake, the John Carpenter's 1982 The Thing is an adaption of the 1950's film, "The Thing From Another World" and a novel.

Again, not a direct remake, but it is a non-conventional remake of the 1932 film of the same name

The movie industry had no business remaking TCM as many times as they did/are.

The Hills Have Eyes remake was decent though.

I just saw a trailer for Evil Dead remake yesterday. Looks good.

None of the Texas chainsaw Massacres remakes were good.
The Rob Zombie Halloween remake was good. Didn't like Friday the 13th remake.
The original Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was better.
Let the Right one In, was better than Let Me In.
3:10 to Yuma was a great remake.
Italian Job remake was better.

Damn,I didn't even think about the thing(1982) and the fly.I've never seen Point Break(lee marvin) but I've seen the remake Payback(mel gibson) and payback was cool.Unfortunately, the new remake (Parker with jason statham) won't live up to those two.

The Magnificent Seven was actually suppose to be a direct remake of The Seven Samurai. However, the western theme was inserted, but many of the same plotlines were kept.

Though never announced by Disney, The Lion King is not only an adaptation of Hamlet but also a remake of the Japanese children's show/movie, "Kimba: the White Lion"

Haven't seen original Inglorious Bastards, but is a remake.
The Taking of Pelham 123 is a good remake.
Assault on Precinct 13, prefer remake.

Inglorious Basterds isn't a remake. Quinton just said he liked the name so he used it.
