So a few days ago I was hit with a fairly hard punch to the liver - hard enough to make me take a knee, but not hard enough to not finish the round. My concern is that it still hurts, especially when stretching or taking deep breaths. I'm worried I may have bruised or cracked a rib.

Is this normal? This is the first time I've been hit hard in the liver, so I have nothing to compare it to.

I don't think it lingers from my experience. You may have bruised ribs. You can also sprain your ribs which has to do with damaging the ligaments that cascade over them. I would go easy on the ab work and listen to your body.

Is normal. Sounds kinda like bruised ribs. Just take it easy for a while. Should be fine in a week, week & a half. If it is bruised ribs only taking it easy will help.

The liver is a solid organ which can bleed. I'd go to the doctor if I were you.

No.

You wouldn't be asking about it a few days later on a forum if you'd ruptured your liver. Probably brushing, same as any other body part. Leave it a week or so, it hasn't eased up by then start thinking about seeing somebody.

You're talking as if the only way to injure a liver is just by massive internal bleeding. The liver can bleed small amounts that can last for days from trauma. Never underestimate a shot to the liver. And from OP's description I wouldn't underestimate this one.

Funny thing about a broken rib is that the doctor can do nothing for you except tell you it's broken. Personal experience with that one.

So Limejuice ruptured his liver, took a knee for a second, then finished his sparring???
No

Again it sounds like your definition of liver damage is only hard blunt trauma that causes severe bleeding. There's many types of liver damage that can be less sever as that. Even during sparring when adrenaline is released to compensate for the hits he takes, he can fight through a less severe liver trauma.

We'll have to agree to disagree.
I speculate its probably bruising rather than liver damage that requires medical treatment, you think the opposite.
Up to you TS.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I'm going to give it a few days and see what it feels like. I researched liver trauma, and it turns out that doctors don't really do anything for it anyways, besides watching to make sure it doesn't get worse (unless it's massive trauma, which requires surgery).

I admit to a bias against doctor's visits - far too many times has the trip been a $300 collection of information I already know. My main concern at this point is healing up in time for my next match on March 1st, so I'll take it easy and hope for a quick recovery.

I think it's bruised ribs if it hurts to breath. Can take a while to heal unfortunately depending on how big the impact. I remember one time not being able to sleep properly for over a week. That was shitty and not even a break. Took almost 5 weeks to fully heal. Nothing you can do about it either other than rest.

Youre fighting in a couple weeks? maybe not the best idea if your carrying an injury to the body.

Got kicked in the liver once. The world just kind of STOPS frozen in time.
Then you realise you can't breathe!! The more you try to breathe and panic, the more it hurts.

True story!

A long slow exhale helps when taking a body shot. Liver, solar plexus--if you try to suck down air right away it sucks twice as bad.

Came to post this and what Frode said.

and in my experience if you get hurt to the body, whether it is ribs or not, it is going to hurt for a little bit.

Also, I fucking love attacking the liver.

Yeah, so do I. I just got the worse of it this time :)

I'm beginning to think it's rib damage, actually. I keep finding new sore spots, and the whole area feels "squashy" if that makes any sense.

Obviously no one knows for sure, but maybe TS should err on the side of caution and see a doctor?
