Recommend a watch: $200-300

I'm only slightly younger than you, TS, and just got my first serious watch, too. I went with an Invicta SubAqua and love it. It's versatile enough for more casual wear but also goes with more professional attire. It's large and hefty but it gets a lot of positive attention so I don't feel it's a gawdy piece, at all. I am looking to pick up a Bulova Accutron sometime later or a Citizen EcoDrive as I really like the aesthetics on a number of their watches and the prices are reasonable.

I've been eyeballing a Tag Heuer Aquaracer but I just can't justify dropping $1500 for a watch. I realize a lot of enthusiasts believe it's worthwhile and a great investment but to me it's just frivolous spending but don't rule out Bulova or even Movado because of the perceived "douche" factor. They both make beautiful watches and with a little shopping around I'm positive you'd find one that's tasteful and suits your sense of style.

My current budget is the $200-300 range. I've looked at a couple Luminox and Seiko models, but that's it. Are you looking for a dress watch, sports watch, something that will work for business and casual?

The Seiko Kinetics or Citizen Eco-Drives are nice.

I'm a technogeek, so I like the Casio Atomic Solar watches. No need to ever set the time or change batteries.

i vote for orient as well. get one of their automatics. best value for the money, quality, low price, but not cheaply made by any means. a great starter watch for someone like yourself.

one thing though, don't order from orient watch usa. go with an approved vendor such as long island watch or amazon. i've heard to many stories of poor customer service from orient usa. orient watch usa is not the manufacturer btw so don't view that as a reflection on orient watch company itself.

You can also often find great deals on several watch forums in the for sale section. Probably the biggest is www.watchuseek.com

this is a great tip as well. i've bought, traded and sold a number of watches on there. you can find some great deals on gently used watches. and the people on there in general are watch freaks and take care of their stuff, so you can expect better condition used than lets say buying from ebay.

I agree that casual watches are pretty pointless these days but a sharp dress watch is a must have imo.

-but I wouldn't wear one in my daily life -as it makes me feel like a prisoner to each minute of the day.

It's like wearing a torture device in a way. -like email notifications, phone ringers, and alert messages.

I'm a fan skeleton watches, though I also see little use in having an accurate timepiece, when you're contextually relying on other people's clocks. (Work, school, appointments etc go by their time, not yours)
