I rewatched RDA v Pettis and I noticed that a lot in the first round RDA looks like he is throwing haymakers, they are connecting and while they are hurting Pettis they looked like they should have doe more damage than they did.

Pettis rarely lands a counter punch in the first round of the fight . The punches Pettis does land are set up with jabs, but he only lands one real counter in the first round and it is off a kick. Now I understand Pettis is not great counter puncher but if they were as big haymakers as they looked he could have either avoided or countered them. Pettis gets caught way more than a guy as good as him should by what looks like haymakers.

This is because as RDA is throwing the left straight he is moving his chin almost into his right armpit out of harms way. This makes it hard for Pettis to counter as RDA only does this as Pettis is circling towards his power hand. RDA can commit to this left straight this much because his chin is safe from the counter and he isn't concerned about being taken down. RDA looks like he is throwing everything into them when really he is moving head out of harms way.
I seriously doubt RDA would have used this tactic if Pettis circled away from his power hand as it would leave RDA very open to counters.

Now before people post on how Conor is going to counter this please remember this is not a how RDA beats Conor thread, it is a thread showing RDA has some clever defensive skills while throwing punches or got very lucking. I am going to give the benefit of the doubt to RDA and Kings MMA.

People thought RDA was some stud striker because he beat Pettis, but o did Alvarez. Pettis isn't a good counter striker and his hands have always been kinda bland. The "Showtime" kick, along with other flashy kicks made people think he was a better striker than he actually was. Conor is right, these guys are gen 2.0 and Conor is 3.0. RDA is like a slower Aldo, very much like a bigger, stronger Brandao.

This guy has no clue what hes talking about.

Pettis isn't a counter puncher? ....what? ....that's his bread and buttah.

He countered the shit out of Melendez. It was actually the reason he got the sub.
One great counter on a slightly flailing opponent doesn't make it his "bread and butter". I wouldn't classify Pettis as a counter puncher at all, he's not great throwing anything while moving/evading never mind punching, which he only uses to set up his amazing kicking game, which he can then only implement mostly while planted. Counter punching's not his strong suit, I bet he wishes it was for the RDA fight, though.

Rda
Blah blah
Rda yadda
Let's watch the fight everybody

Well he countered him more than once but I honestly don't remember any other examples of him doing as effectively in any of his other fights. I don't even remember his first fight against Benson.

Stop comparing Conor and Pettis. They are completely different strikers.

The best way to win for RDA is to setup double with punches and work from there. I'm not trying to discredit RDA's striking but trying chances against dangerous KO artist is not worth it

Very much like a bigger, stronger Brandao, this right here proves how stupid you are.
RDA is like a slower Aldo, this here proves youre a fucking parrot.

Conor is right, these guys are gen 2.0 and Conor is 3.0. RDA is like a slower Aldo, very much like a bigger, stronger Brandao.

1. RDA beat down Pettis... Alvarez merely survived by holding on for dear life.

2. Lol Conor 3.0? The next gen fighter apparently has mediocre TD defense and an archaic and inactive closed guard when planted on his back.
