I train exclusively with the gi, but I was thinking about training no-gi in the near future. Is there any particular advantage to having a long sleeved rashguard, as opposed to a short sleeve? Also, are there advantages to short sleeve rashguards?

I've always used long sleeved.

They've worked well for me... Get one at wal mart real cheap and see if you like it, grab a short one while ur at it so you can compare em.

The only advantage is the long sleeve covers more skin, which is the point of a rashguard.

However, I have ran into a handful of people who see long sleeve rashguards and will try to use the sleeves like gi sleeves for a pistol grip when you're supposed to be rolling no-gi. In this case, I would venture to say that if you use shorter sleeves then you won't have to explain how rashguards *can* rip to some mongoloid.

You'd be amazed how a gi-to-no-gi transition can make some people retarded. Just hold my fuckin wrist.... /rant off.

as everyone else said, no difference at all. its entirely up to preference. that aside, dont get one at walmart like someone said. believe it or not, but rashguards have to be good quality or else theyll rip really easy, or they wont absorb water right.

for example my atama rashguard would balloon up when i would go in water (ocean, or pool). it also ripped within 6 months. all of the surfing rashguards that i surf in, i also train in, and they are far superior to any 'mma' rashguard i have used.

so my 2 cents... if youre buying a rashguard, get a good surfing one. (quicksilver is my favorite).

i prefer short sleeve because i have big, slippery wrists and can escape most wrist holds.

That's a good point. I've noticed that several grappling/MMA rashguards are prone to deteriorate much faster than other rashguards.
As for short vs. long, I personaly go with short. It's just less material to potentialy get in the way, which is exactly what happens on rare occasion with long sleeve. Aside from the fact that I've had them roll up, longer sleeves have a higher tendancy to become ripped or deteriorate over time.

Long sleeve looks way cooler, and protects your elbows a little more.

i prefer the long sleeve myself. i have never had a problem with the rash guards that walmart sells. i don't train a lot of no gi but i do put mine to use and they have yet to fail on me.

I personally prefer longsleeve but there is not much difference between the two.

I use longsleeve Walmart cheapos and never have a problem with sweat absorb or tears. The little icon/symbol thing came off but I don't care. I'm not the guy who hits the gym with a nice new shiny gym clothes. :)

I prefer shortsleeve actually. Just feels more comfortable...

Simple way to decide which to wear:

If it's warm, go short sleeve. If it's cold, go long sleeve

I agree. Long sleeves often more protection.

It's a question of comfort vs protection really.........

Long sleaves are great. Just go with what feels better.

i have both. the ones like underarmor are great because i cools you off so fast. Love the underarmor heat series..

Long sleeve will keep the contact between your skin and others at a minimal. As well as keep the contact of your elbows off the mat.. to avoid things like ringworm, flatworts, and other nasty shits..

Ive tried on alot and the ones at walmart for 11$ are as good as anything else out there.
Compared to the Nike and Underarmour ones that are 40$

i have the starter and champion ones and to be honest while they are good they are not as "snug" as the underarmor and don't cool you down as fast either./

I like the short sleeves, my skin gets real slick and I can slide out of submissions.

I like long sleeved better because it protects you more and, in my opinion, that's an important part of a rashguard's job...
