Among other things, Assunção said:

"My next fight was supposed to be against Cruz. The deal was almost done but he didn´t want to take the fight, which makes sense in terms of rankings. He just refused it.
Now his coach said that he´s out indefinitely. I think he´s trying to look for another easy opportunity like when he came back after 3 years out and only fought Mizugaki to get a TS. I just hope de UFC respects the fighters who are active like myself and Moraes "

Imo Moraes should get the next TS, but if Assunção beats Font today, this fight against Cruz would make perfect sense for the #1 contender.

Thoughts???

People won't agree with Assuncao because he's not popular but he's right, he called Cruz out a year and a half ago and Cruz deflected it by trying to make out he's bigger than fighting Assuncao, despite Assuncao being 10-1 at BW.

As shitty as it sounds, I can see why he might have ducked him.

No one cares

Dom just wants his belt back. He doesn't feel like fighting up the ranks anymore. It's annoying but you can't make him take the fight.

Agreed, and hard to make him work le ranks back up when he is made of glass, had accomplished so much at 135 and sold comparitively well, and also may have just a few fights left. I just think CoGar is a dreadful matchup for him, but he may be able to squeak out a TJ win, and TJ probably wants to run that back too.

At this point I believe TJ would be too much for this inactive Cruz. Assunção is also a bad match up for Cruz imo, regardless of the result of his fight tonight (Font is a legit fighter himself, so he might be able to beat Raphael).

Agreed. That was a weak response on Dom's part. It sounded like he didn´t want anything to do with Assunção back then and still doesn´t.

Can't blame either guy as they're just trying to manage their careers properly.

But if he beats Font impressively and they don't give Assuncao a TS or at least #1 contender fight, that would be some Jon Fitch level treatment by the UFC. Just look at the man's UFC record FFS.

Assuncao is 10-1 in his ufc run. A current 3 fight win streak. The issue is he has 3 finishes in his 10 wins. The ufc will be very hesitant to put him in s titleshot. Font is a quiet killer which makes me think they're hoping Font beats him.
If Assuncao wants a top fight, he needs to finish Font in entertaining fashion. He won his last by ko but I didn't even bother to watch it. It's hard to get excited for his fights

Doesn't Cruz have 1 finish in his UFC career though? I'm not sure that is the issue at all. It's got to be asses in seats or the lack thereof rather. There's no other reason the UFC considers before or as much as sales.

Pfft. Ok there, Raffy. Cruz would make him look slow and stupid. Who tf ducks Assunção? Lol.

Ariel: is tonight the greatest moment of Dominick Cruz's life?
Cruz: "no, the greatest moment in my life was realizing that I didn't need the belt to be happy"

And so beltless Dominick Cruz lived happily ever after

Cruz wasted the main years of his prime going through multiple surgeries and rehabs.

He doesn't have much room left for error. Another major injury and it would likely mean the end of his career, especially with his style of fighting.

I don't hold it against Cruz, the man has more than paid his dues. He's carried the lighter weight classes since before the UFC had any interest in them.

Still BW GOAT

Why would Cruz want to fight Assucao? He is a very good fighter, but is unknown. It’s a lose-lose situation for Cruz, he can just wait for a title shot at this point.

I mean Cruz is made of glass so Assunção will end up not fighting for like 5 years if he waits to fight Cruz.

Yea, that was the one non-title fight in Cruz's career.

Give him more non-title fights where the competition isn't so elite, and he'll have more finishes.

Can he wait for a title shot though?

More people seem to be talking about Moraes getting the next title shot than Cruz.
