He’s probably my least favourite fighter but if Khabib is gone he could be the best lightweight in the world. The top of the division is stacked with fighters who are known predominantly for their striking, which bodes well for him. I would pick him against Gaethje, Poirier, Tony, Chandler, RDA, Hooker, etc. I see fights with Chandler and RDA looking more like the Mendes win than the Khabib loss.
I am not sure about Oliveira 2.0 after this weekend — if he can get Conor down to the mat as easily as he did Tony then he wins easily, but McGregor would be far more cautious and hits much harder. I know Oliveira has improved greatly but I still have questions about his ability to take a big shot (see: Swanson, Cerrone, Felder losses).
Islam, Gillespie, Lee and other wrestlers would be interesting future matchups but they aren’t currently in the mix and I don’t expect Conor to stick around that long before moving on to 170 and/or boxing.
All that being said, based on his strength of schedule (ie. a lack thereof) he arguably shouldn’t even be eligible for the rankings at all.
