So I'm listening to the Nov 6 UFC Unfiltered and Serra talks about an old Paulson fight back before rules got streamlined, and the opponent - a boxer - just grabbed his ponytail and smashed his face again and again.

And it's on youtube. I timestamped an especially brutal part, but it's a 16 min fight total with lots of brutal examples.

But watching from the beginning you hear the ref say "2 min on the ground, 22 min match, no submissions, no choking, no grappling". So it's a weird hybrid NHB Standup Fight, I suppose. Which I don't understand since Warring went on to lose to Renzo in the finals by Ezekiel....I guess I'll watch that one later.

Enjoy.

OK that didn't take long.

In the finals, the ref said "10 minutes on the mat, 22 minute fight" but didn't say "no chokes, no submissions" this time.

Timestamped.

Wondery why they'd have no submission in the semi's but allow them in the finals.

Might have been one of those early orgs where since they didn't have a rules standard they'd start with a base of rules and then allow the combatants to haggle over what was allowed and what wasn't. Sometimes in early events you'd see completely different looking fights from one fight to the next. Most likely situation here was Paulsen was OK with having limited chances for grappling, where Renzo probably wouldn't fight without the 10 mins on the ground.

"The event featured an 8 man tournament that was broke up in to two divisions/brackets, Grapplers, and Strikers with each division having its own set of rules. The winner from each would advance to the finals."

So Warring went to the finals via the Strikers bracket and Renzo went t the finals via the Grapplers bracket.

90's MMA was so awesome :)

Ah, I recall a tourney like that, probably this one. I guess in the finals the rules kinda met in the middle.

Indeed, I'd be down for weird rules cards like these now. Not quite Fight Circus, more legitimately standard fights just with tweaked rule sets. Would be a nice change of pace.

Warring should have been in at least the first or second UFC event I think he would have done much better than most of the early strikers.

Yeah he'd have knocked some people the fuck out. I was rewatching this fight the other day. It was brutal seeing a fighter hold someone by the hair & heel stomp their head in while they are on the ground.

I'd say he's better than Pat Smith, Keith Hackney, Mark Hall but not sure if he's as good as Gordeau maybe but I know that he wouldn't just give up when the fight hits the ground he would at least improvise to the best of his ability, too bad he wasn't invited to the early UFC's.

Another fighter from way back that should have also been in the early UFC's and this to me is a travesty was Jean Reviere from Montreal this guy was incredible he was a Karate/Judo fighter that
has a win over Carlos Newton, he also fought in K1 it would have been amazing to see him in one of the early tournaments I believe he would have done very well.
