As much as I like Cain, this is the only logical response. If I had a kid and someone molested him dozens of times, yeah I would want to shoot the as well, but Cain did it in a way that could have killed so many other people. And like you said, his kid needs him the most right now, not being held from him for a couple years where it's probably harder to heal and move on without his Dad there.
