Just watched inside out with my kids on Netflix (I had previously watched it by myself on a flight).

Two questions that popped into my head:

Why are Riley's emotions represented as both male and female whereas every other characters emotions is either male or female exclusively

Joy and sadness get sucked up that tube but when fear tried to quit he couldn't go up the tube what's up with that

Why didn't they just tie up the sad chubby chick

she's a transgender. I thought that was obvious from the beginning.

I came to that conclusion but wasn't clear from the beginning
think about it. a girl who loves hockey, a traditionally boy sport. if she's transgender, it makes sense she's interested in sports instead of barbie dolls and dress up.

No false loving hockey just makes her a tomboy

Tomboy =/= trans

There are a few ways to view it.
I believe the writer or director mentioned it was just easier to have all male or all female for others to have a quick distinction.

Riley is a tomboy, or if you want to strech it she could be a lesbian, hermaphrodite, or trans but as I said it's a stretch.

Another is who cares its just a movie.
