Question For Walking Dead Fans

Just watched episode two of season three, and noticed the big black dude is called big tiny, the exact name and appearance of the character big tiny in the zombie fallout books (which were horrendously written but mildly entertaining). Has anyone read the graphic novels and can tell me if big tiny was in them? Was just wondering who copied who, or if it's just a cross over for zombie fans!
