Don't worry, this isn't an ambush thread, or gotcha thread.

I was having a debate with a really good liberal friend of mine, and he believes certain guns shouldn't be accessible to the public, like M4s, ar-15, ak-47s etc.

I stated that if an American is law abiding then yea, I don't see why they shouldn't.

He then asked me why would anyone need such a weapon in this country.

So here's my question to you owners of machine guns/assault rifles, etc..

Why do you own them?

Because you like the design and appreciate their fire power?

In case the government gets out of control?

Foreign invasion?

Protection?

All opinions welcome. Thank you.

People shouldn't have to provide a reason why they want to buy whatever the fuck they want.

Tell your :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: friend more people are killed by claw hammers than "assault rifles."

Because shooting is a lot of fun.

m4s and ak47s are banned (essentially)

ar15s and wasr10s are not banned.

you are operating under the assumption that civilians are using full autos assault rifles.

civilians are using plain rifles. that have capacity. not assault rifles or machine guns.

people in general watch too much hollywood for their education.

a ar15 or wasr10 (ak like platform) is a PLAIN RIFLE. not Assault

Ask your friend why he really feels like he needs his first amendment rights.

Personal enjoyment and satisfaction related to target shooting is why I own. The human right to self-defense (and it being a Constitutional guarantee) is why I support them in principle.

I can't wait until we start seeing more threads on why people need/choose Islam. Dat archaic religion, yo.

You wouldn't oppose people buying grenades, dirty bombs or nuclear weapons?

All of the reasons you listed to be honest. I built an AR15 556/223 because the parts are so interchangeable first and foremost. I can build what a kid would call a "sniper rifle", or I can build something they'd see a seal carry. All on the same platform.

Ammo for it is easy to find as well as different tyles. It's fun and easy to shoot, and hitting your target always makes you feel good and gain confidence.

It's literally am equalizer against any armed threat. If police or military ever were a threat in the future, they'd be coming with the same rifle more or less. There is a reason for that. I don't forsee that happening and god willing it never does. Having ARS in the general populace virtually guarantees that it wont

Semi-autos (let alone specific semi-autos with detachable magazines, pistol grips and collapsible/folding stocks) aren't spectacularly more deadly.
The reason they tend to feature in massacres has more to do with their nature as fetish objects in the revenge fantasies of alienated losers.
I'd much prefer Australia to have taken the New Zealand route on legislation in the '90s, I don't think the semi-auto restrictions really achieve much.

Nuclear material isn't classified as "arms" I don't believe. Banning nuclear material from the general public isn't unconstitutional I don't think. Grenades should be fair game in my opinion

First I need you to explain what the difference is between a .308 hunting rifle, and an AR-15.

See, I promise you that a collapsing stock or hand guard does not make a rifle more deadly.

I oppose the assault rifle ban, because I have little doubt that they will try and re-define what an assault rifle is down the road, because the current legal definition is retarded.

I don't own an "assault rifle." Reason I would get one? Fun to shoot, protection, wild animals, shtf, govt and economic collapse. And to pass down guns to my kids when they are old enough.

You don't need to justify to liberals why you like guns that they don't, it's none of their fucking business.

Because criminals also have them and I reserve the right to equal or superior firepower to anyone that might become predatory towards me.

2 of the 3 AR15s I own were built or modified with hunting in mind.

One is a short range, large-game rifle chambered in .50 Beowulf. I built this one from a stripped lower receiver with the intent of hunting black bear and elk.

The other was modified to be a very capable deer rifle, chambered in 6.8spc

You might ask why I would use an AR15 for hunting. Well:
1)Every part can be replaced/upgraded.
2)Various types of triggers can be swapped out easily, so there's no need to leave your rifle at the Smith for 2 months getting a trigger job
3)slings can be mounted in spots so the rifle can be carried in better/more comfortable ways than traditional hunting rifles.
4)A telescoping stock is perfect for when you hunt in the morning with a coat on and then throughout the day with just a shirt.
5)Recoil is reduced because of the semi auto action soaking up some of it, especially with the .50 Beowulf, allowing for a quicker second shot if needed.
6)Personal preference, but pistol grips are more comfortable than a traditional stocks grip.
7)The rifle is much more compact, making exiting trucks or ATVs easier

Also, I don't use large capacity magazines due to the extra weight. I use a 7 round mag and keep 5 cartridges in it for my .50 Beowulf and a 10 round mag loaded with 5 rounds for my 6.8spc.

Exercising a constitutional right doesn't require a need.
