I train in Judo/sambo recreationally. We don't advertise but everyone is welcome.

Now we had a brazilian jujitsu folks come in. I noticed sometimes they rant and or vent out about politics and career of bjj.

One guy mentioned he was next in line to get a bjj black belt or to teach bjj but got passed over. Another was something about a franchise fee with a Gracie Barra organization or something.

I am curious to know about the bjj business or politics. Is it legit or are these guys being dramatic for no reason. Love to hear because I presume that bjj culture is one big happy family.

BJJ is more of a business than Judo. Lots of folks are all about franchising and branding.

I never really gave a fuck about any of it, and just shut up and trained :)

There isn't a set amount of black belts each grading. That sounds weird.

The main thing I find is people get a bit funny about going hard on certain training sessions. If you happen to roll hard when they are in the mood to go easy they get upset.

Or the people that say they are injured and to not attack certain things e.g legs but will then do nothing but leg locks on you and get upset when you attack the legs back because that's where they have guided the roll.

if there's no clearly communicated expectations, then they have no leg to stand on.

If I wanna go hard I communicate so, if they don't then we go light. I'm an adult...so are they

but if I ask to go light and they go hard, it's my duty as the higher belt (which is usually the case) to remind them...if they dont..then it's long kesa pressure time if im able (that usually works) , or I just protect myself and avoid them

100%. I usually just match the intensity and it's only an issue with lower belts.

I have rolled a heap with injuries and I work off the theory it's on me to protect it. I don't ask people not to go after stuff, I just protect it in the roll.

My favourite is always people attacking my legs after asking me to stay off their legs. It's like saying you want to only do boxing sparring with someone and then starting to kick whilst staying at kicking range. I just catch and release their legs whilst staring into their eyes where possible. eventually they will work it out haha.

Is it still big business?

I mean I could see it being a lucrative venture in 2005 with bjj and ufc blowing up but I feel like there is so many bjj black belts now a days that you have to be more than just a black belt to stand out.
