Quebec’s Human Rights Tribunal ruled Wednesday that the popular bilingual comedian Mike Ward violated the right to equality of Jérémy Gabriel and ordered the comic to pay $35,000 for mocking the 19-year old singer who has a condition that causes facial disfigurement.

The tribunal said the comedian’s jokes discriminated against Gabriel, who came to fame when he travelled to Rome to sing for Pope Benedict XVI in 2006.

In a recurring bit that Ward used in his stand-up act between 2010 and 2013, he would tell his audience that he was pleased to see Gabriel achieve fame and attention after his papal visit. “Everyone said he sucked, but I defended him,” Ward would repeat to the crowd. “They would say he is terrible, but I was like, ‘He’s dying but he’s living a dream, leave him alone.’ ”

Ward would then pivot into a feigned realization that Gabriel isn’t dying: while Treacher Collins syndrome, which he has, can sometimes cause serious, life-threatening respiratory complications, that is not the case in this instance.

“But now, five years later, and he’s still not dead. Me, I defended him, like an idiot, and he won’t die,” Ward would exclaim.

“He’s unkillable. I saw him at the water park. I tried to drown him, but I couldn’t. Then I went on the Internet to figure out what was wrong with him, and you know what it was? He’s ugly, goddammit.”
Before saying this is a result of SJW culture, please realize that human rights tribunals in Canada have been kangaroo courts for decades.

shouldn't the right to equality include disabled people to be the butt of a joke? Bad taste or not.

Such tribunals serve an important purpose, which this does not seem to be.

I wonder why the Pope did not heal him?

As tasteless and frankly not funny as those jokes are, is this something we as a society want to do? Start fining comedians? Comedy is the last bastion of free speech. I think it's dangerous to do this.

how silly. Just having someone dis you is a violation of peoples human rights now ?

I wonder if Jimmy could get away with that joke?

There goes that speech from "Newsroom", where he lists Canada as a free country, and then goes on to list like 8 other places that don't even claim to have freedom of speech.

The teen got tons of media attention as a child because people thought he was going to die. Turns out his condition isn't lethal at all. Now he's continuing to squeeze the fame for all its' worth despite having no talent and having been given initial attention only out of pity. Poor little shit doesn't understand the pity has run out. A comedian making a 3 min joke about him several years ago is probably the best thing that's happened to him since.

Quebec is barely part of Canada, most residents of Quebec dislike people outside of Quebec and most outside of Quebec dislikes the people of Quebec. Quebecers are the type to fart and then take a big whiff of it and sigh in joyous glee.

Agreed 100%. Not remotely funny, but it's even more sickening that someone is fined for speech. I feel very lucky to be in the US where free speech is still protected for the most part. Unreal how repulsive Canadian speech laws are. Pathetic and creepy.

Here is Gavin McInnes interviewing comedian Mike Ward.

Ha, I went through a few commercials and TV shows with Gavin's suggestion of switching roles and can only imagine the PSAs that would come out if anybody dared make that.

Because it's 2016? Seriously though this is some bullshit. This guy's jokes were cruel, sure - but even worse, they weren't funny. Maybe it's in the telling. But the consequences of his cruel unfunny jokes should be somebody not hiring him for a gig, not the fuckin government fining him 35k wtf is that? I mean I already knew we don't have true freedom of speech up here, but still this is ridiculous. What if someone is fat, can they be made fun of at all? Short, bald, stupid? Anything?

That's some real nanny state bullshit. How did the joke impact the kids right to equality? Wtf?

His distasteful jokes aren't funny but taking money out of his purse for delivering them is idiotic. Just ignore his comedy from that point onward. If everyone who doesn't like this kind of "humor" followed this simple rule, he would soon be out of work, forced to think about his behavior and hopefully mend his ways.

The funniest part about this is ironically that I'd never heard of either of these people...
So now more people than ever have heard the offensive joke, and looked up this kids ugly mug.

so is this tribunal decision enforceable? I mean is this a government agency thats going to go after him or what?

Poor taste for sure, but I've always thought comedy should be a free market. If you truly offend people, let it hit you in the pocketbook, but because people don't pay to see you, not some iffy judgement.
