Q&A on Thailand

beginners are given full attention in thai camps.
we were all beginners once.
if they see you are dedicated they will help you.
i've seen many people come to camps for months who have never trained a day in there life.
in those months you get the equivalent of several years training back home.

Thanks, that is encouraging. Any specific camps you would recommend for a beginner?

relakz, any of the big name camps will serve you well.
if i were you i would head to isan, away from the tourists.
even buriram, its only 4 hours from BKK.

Those chips were foul; nori seaweed all the way.

Or those fake Bugles.

Sang Som and coke is pretty good stuff. I'm not a picky drinker though...

Just because that's what they usually drink, it doesn't mean they can't tell the difference. From my experience, they LOVE Johnnie Walker. Buy and share a bottle of red or black and you've made friends for life.

Ah... so when you guys say a bottle of "good whiskey", you don't mean "good" as much as you mean "not bad" :)
I was thinking somewhat above the level of JW red/black.

JW is probably the best whiskey that you can buy in a store in Thailand. Very little high end liquor gets imported, and the places you typically see it are in high end bars.

By the way, I'm not sure if there was anyone from Sherdog at Sinbi back in July/August (besides Matt) when Andria and I were there training, but she'll be fighting on M-1: Breakthrough this Friday, and Sherdog is streaming the undercard for free. I'll be there cornering her.

My friend and i are considering going to Thailand next summer to learn some Muay Thai. He came up with a price of $5600. It includes accommodation, food, the flight and training at the Horizon camp for 6 weeks. Is this a good price? I don't want to get ripped off

Seems a bit expensive to me

Where are you flying out of?

Let's see Horizon training with accomodation and meals is $1558.82 at the current exchange rate of 34 baht per US dollar for six weeks FULL PRICE for a single. This is important to note because you can usually barter a little to get the price down for longer stays and if you wish to share a room with your friend you save a bit more....pretty much all these figures are what you would pay if you didn't bother to shop around and get a deal.

A flight shouldn't cost more then $1300 for coach from anywhere in North America.

So lets round up 1600 for muay thai camp, 1300 for your roundrtrip ticket, 100 if you need to renew a visa, approx 380 for shots, insurance shouldn't cost more then 120 for 6 weeks, more if you tell them what you are doing in Thailand-less if you are Canadian as MOST medical expenses you incur will be reimbursed. That's $3500 (with tax figured in) for everything. So I suppose if you want to use the rest for debauchery then 5600 would be an alright figure....

Jesus! What could one do with $2100 play money in Thailand?

I plan to stay six months on around 6K...but then again I don't drink or indulge in other "Pattaya" like situations. Course I might sample if the mood strikes me though...we'll see.

Way too expensive. You don't want to be a sucker. Airfare from US around 1300 for summer depending on who you fly on, accommodation and training you can get for about 650 to 700 USD. This can also fluctuate depending on the type of accommodation you choose. So I got 2000 USD right now, spending cash is up to you. you can eat like Thais for cheap of you can go to western style restaurant and pay nearly 4x times what you should.

eat in the camp for free,if not eat from the street stalls food.

มวยไทย nice sig cali_chute_boxe.

Thats very cool!

One of my training partners was at your gym a week or so ago when he was visiting his father in NJ. He was a skinny kid names Tariq, trained BJJ.

I know some of you have seen this but most of you have not. Here is a great video about Thai food, culture, and it even has some muaythai. Near the end of the video Anorak's (Rob Cox) gym is featured and he has a brief appearance also. Enjoy Sherdoggers.
