I finally got around to watching Double or Nothing the other day and, like most wrestling shows now-a-days, I thought it was a mixed bag.
Dustin v Cody was great and Jericho v Omega was pretty good, though I thought the promos after both of those matches, though well delivered, made no sense for the characters or situations. Cody was a heel the whole match, so why is he acting all nice to his brother after beating on him for 30 minutes, and why did Dustin hug it out after Cody cheated his way to a victory in his promotional debut? It would have made sense if there had been a double-turn or Cody was face, but that wasn't the case. And Jericho starting his promo by calling out people for booing him when the whole arena was cheering his win was confusing.
Can someone tell me if I missed something, but were there special rules for the tag title match? It's possible I missed some announcement, but I went in expecting it to be contested under normal tag rules, but that couldn't have been the case. In the match, tagging seemed completely optional and most of the time there were more than two people in the ring. One time Fenix tagged in from the wrong corner and the ref allowed it and later on one of the announcers mentioned that participants could choose who to pin for the W...it was a friggin mess and I hated it. (I take back my complaints if they were Tornado Tag matches or something and I was just unaware)
I was disappointed to see that a lot of what I currently don't like about WWE will be making it over to AEW, like: unfunny backstage comedy segments, the 3-man booth (JR was surprisingly good but the other two were terrible and if I never hear Excalibur say "DRIIIIVVVEEERRRR" again it'll be too soon), authority figure inserting contestants into bouts, and lights-go-out debuts.
Rest of the night was OK except for the Battle Royale which stunk. MJF, Hangman, and Luchasaurus were the only standouts. The night would have been better spent eliminating the Battle Royale and having those three in a triple threat instead.
