Long and short of it. The Battlefield series was based upon an element of accuracy. Somewhat faithful depictions of actual wars, with V being about World War 2. Then, the first trailer for V drops, and it's some purple haired woman, with a painted face, and a robot arm. So, the people used to faithful depictions, said "What the fuck are you doing?! There weren't purple haired women with robot arms in World War 2! And why have you given British soldiers Katana's?!"
Then, instead of doing the rational thing, being "Well, we're using some creative license for this one, we're gonna take it in a more fantasy driven direction", EA then said "Pffft, those people complaining are just uneducated bigots. If you don't like it, don't play it!" So the "Uneducated Bigots" who were their customer base said "Okay, we won't", and BFV flopped pretty epically.
I love capitalism.
