Yeah I'm no where near your BJJ level but that's the first thing I thought too. Shouldn't you have hooks in for that to work?
Well im just a blue belt so take my opinions with grains if salt.
But basically he did a lot wrong. I think if you're going to roll the guy from turtle, yeah you want the neear side hook. Then the roll opens up for the far side hook.
If you're going to ride the back of the guy in turtle, you cant have your weight and head that far forward. You need to basically have your hips over the turtle guys tail bone, otherwise you risk being buckled forward and off. Which would have happened anyway even if chael had not tried to roll.
But you dont even have to roll. If you cant get hooks, you can use your near shin to block the other guys, grab his far hip, scoot sideways and tip the over. Then hook the opponents top arm so he cant roll back to his belly.
That's from my bjj stand point, but even from a wrestling standpoint chael couldn't have rolled or tipped fedor from there. If we went straight to instinctive wrestling, he could have hit this tilt loading.
I think chael had recovered from the shots honestly. I was actually impressed he took fedor down several times with ankle picks. To take down a seasoned grappler with such a fundamental technique was nice.
