I think with Airport, there's the element of humour. It's "Holy shit, look at Rusev's face!", and just his sheer audacity. Wally's an incel who's gonna go on a rampage.

It's social media doing this to them. They get a like, a retweet, a reply, all of a sudden "Hey, we're friends now!", and they become obsessed. Wally has deluded himself to such a degree that he's gonna meet Carmella for a coffee, have a nice conversation, and that would be the start of something, because he's just "so sweet" to her.
