Wouldn't it be better for the owners to rent out the stadiums they own for te rest of the year and take all the money for themselves?

There is no one who needs that sort of space. The only rational enterprise is the music business, and with music artists no longer being performers the bottom fell out long ago. Major acts can barely hold onto a basketball/hockey stadium now, and many of those are in the about to die of old age range.
