And originally Vince thought it was a terrible idea and would be really boring. It was Dick Ebersol who loved the idea and the drama of the fans waiting for who would come out next. He was the one who pushed for Vince to do it

I was just reading up on the history the other day. Vince took a lot of convincing, said no a bunch of times, but then decided to give it a chance for that cable special they were doing, which turned out to be the 1988 Rumble. Whatever I was reading also said that they did a Rumble at a house show before that and One Man Gang won.
