Cornette was a good booker until about 1999, but in the turn of the milennium, it was like the Y2K thing happened in his head, and only the latter 2 numbers of the year changed in his mind, so instead of it ticking over to 2000, it went to 1900.
Which is why you hear him saying, without a hint of irony, "This sports entertainment stuff isn't pro-wrestling, because pro-wrestling is supposed to be real!"
And while I agree with some of the sentiment, especially about psychology and no-selling offence, it's not 1976 anymore, a double-axe handle from the second rope can't be a finisher anymore. A babyface can't be all "Golly gee willikers! I'm so happy to finally be back here in front of these people here in Bumfuck, Mississippi", because it's disengenuous now. If I was a pro-wrestler, the last place I would want to be is some inbred hick town where the natives share 3 teeth and a single bloodline and the arena smells of moonshine and incest. It becomes more fake doing that.
