I'm not happy with the vet right now. I took my cat in because he's constipated for the last couple of days and quit eating yesterday. They did the blood work and x-rays and found out he has chronic kidney disease in his left kidney. Literally the first option they gave us was euthanasia. We said no. Then they said they can keep him there for 48 hours and keep him on fluid shots, but it probably wouldn't do anything, but it might help, and it would cost $4200. We said no. It blew my mind when my daughter is sitting there crying her eyes out and they're trying to sell fluid shots for $4200. They even knew he was having no issues getting fluids and was still urinating even though he wasn't pooping and the guy tried to sell us 2 days of fluids for $4200.
So they gave us an outpatient option for $400. Gave him some fluids, gave him some anti-nausea medicine, and sent him home with us. I was googling my ass off the entire time I was there and found out cats can live well for months with stage 4 CKD if not years with one good kidney. You just have to change their diets to good kidney support diets and give them kidney support supplements, which I already have coming in the morning.
I'm not trying to make my cat suffer, but I don't think he's at the point of suffering yet, it blew my mind when the first thing they said was euthanasia. As soon as we got home he ate, drank some water, and has been chilling in his favorite spot. Even if he only lives another week I'd rather him live a good week hanging out in his favorite spots with his people.
I'm hoping a good diet change and this kidney support supplement will help him live for awhile longer. I'd rather at least give it a shot to have him around awhile longer, cause I know he ain't in severe pain yet.
My daughter is 22 years old and has had this cat since she was 5. It's weird as fuck these people's first instinct is euthanasia before discussing any other options. I'm not gonna take away my daughter's best friend without trying other things.
