Hogan was so insanely over in the AWA
AWA Hogan is so damn intense and a 6’7 320 lb house of fire. He still had a little of that in the initial Hulkamania run but nothing like the AWA level of it . He makes me genuinely fear for Bockwinkel’s life in the matches I’ve watched

The intensity he walks out with is just unreal.

Speaking of Hulkamania, 40 years ago today Hulk Hogan made his return to the WWF after a 3 year absence when he surprised everyone by coming to help Bob Backlund battle the Wild Samoans and Capt Lou Albano
This set the stage for Hogan replacing Backlund in his rematch title shot against Iron Sheik in 2 and a half weeks at Madison Square Garden, and the rest, as they say, is history...

Technically, Hogan made his WWF return at a Wrestling At The Chase episode that was taped on December 28, 1983 and aired on January 1, 1984 but that was a regional show that was taped in St Louis and only aired in that area when Vince bought the tv slot away from the tv station after it was mismanaged by the Kansas City crew of Geigel, Race and Gagne

This show was taped on January 3 but aired on January 7

Insulting the weirdos who buy their shit, time their matches and bombard their boss X account about wanting more women wrestlers on their shows is a bold strategy.

Is 12/28 when Verne got the telegram about Hogan leaving him?

I think that was in November, wasnt it?
Hogan left for Japan in the middle of November '83 and never worked for Verne again even though Verne kept advertising him for house shows

It's something I remember from Death of the Territories. Verne got a message from I think Eddie Graham about Hogan leaving for New York around Christmas and he thought it was a rib.

It was from Hogan but supposedly Verne thought it was a rib from Eddie Graham, maybe it was Christmas

Merry Christmas, ya filthy animal!

- Hulkster, probably

At a wrestling extravaganza in St. Paul in 1982, Hogan bumped into Andre the Giant, the WWF's biggest star, in the ring. The crowd went silent.

"Verne said, 'Oh my god, there's our match,'" Greg Gagne says.

Verne called up Vince McMahon, Sr., to set up the face-off. They planned it for early 1984. To lead up to the big event and build the drama, Verne booked Hogan for a big series of matches during Christmas week 1983. By then, Vince McMahon, Jr., had bought the business from his father.

On December 18, Verne got a telegram from Hogan.

"I will not be returning to the AWA," the telegram read.

Verne laughed and tossed the telegram out. He had a friend who liked to play practical jokes, and this looked like one of them.

On Christmas night, the St. Paul Civic Center was packed. The crowd stomped and cheered, eager for Hogan to enter the ring. But Hogan wasn't in the building.

Greg Gagne called him up. Hogan was nowhere near the stadium. He had no intention of wrestling in the match that night.

"He actually told me that McMahon was paying him more not to show up," Greg Gagne recounts.

@bigTone’s Jags getting their shit pushed in, opening the door for the noble Houston Texans to take the damn division!
