Putting Permanent Stripes on Your Belt

If you want a clean look and are concerned about the stripes holding up to repeated washing, use white electrical tape. I could care less. If a stripe falls off I might get to replacing it whenever I'm super bored.

I usually just put my own stripes on anyways. Is my instructor supposed to do that?

I like stripes that have that "seasoned" look to them and aren't all neat.

Being a noob and not knowing all of the sacred unspoken BJJ etiquette rules... I figured I would ask.

I didn't want to offend because I have "non-original" tape that the instructor gave.

Don't think I have super glue, but will try to get some. For now, I did try a bunch of layers of tape. For some reason, I just thought it would unravel. Had one wash so far and so far so good.

This is what I do. They stay on much longer than any other tape I've used

In the youth martial arts class I help with, the instructor has been in the habit of putting black electrical tape on the kids belts for stripes. Next striping, I'm personally gonna try super glue or fabric clue with some pieces of black cloth (cotton since the belt is cotton) and see how that works. Should look more professional as well.

You could probably even get a seamstress to sew the stripes on for you with a heavy duty industrial sewing machine.

It doesn't even take any kind of heavy duty special machine. A regular machine does it just fine. It is very, very easy -- like less than one minute.

I dunno. I don't sew :icon_lol: I just assumed since the belts in BJJ seemingly are thicker you would want quality stitching more than the average guy could be bothered to do by hand. That was my logic anyway. But thanks for the correction. I'll try to see if someone I know has a sewing machine to try it on the next round of stripes.

Use Johnson & Johnson waterproof tape, which contains some rubber. Apply it to the belt. Sean Roberts would then use a lighter to heat the tape and have it melt onto itself and the belt. I would do something similiar: use an iron (and a cloth I don't mind staining) to melt the tape. I train quite a bit and they still stay on for years. They're starting to fall off now, but these days I'm too lazy to replace them.

I look at it as earning my stripes in reverse.

1st rule of Jiu Jitsu.... you don't wash your belt )). But my stripes used to come off during rolling after a few months, to the point that i started to tie them lol and they didnt look like stripes at all anymore... until my instructor finally said that it looks ridiculous and re-striped the belt
