The weight cuts and its health effects on fighters have been well documented and debated on here, some suggesting drastic measures to prevent a large weight cuts. Personally, it's been such a close part of what wrestling is for me, and I don't really have a big issue with weight cutting itself.
One wonders however, if it gives more benefits than losses, due to its draining effect on its fighters. However, until proven otherwise, I see it two possible scenarios looking in. One is fighters or wrestlers enjoy the suffering it causes on their body and the pain and possible health consequences like kidney damage, even if it might lessen their performance.
Or, the other is that fighters and wrestlers believe from first hand experience the advantage that they could gain from having that a few extra weight advantages, since everyone cuts weights and possible weight advantage from it isn't likely drastic
I don't really think some people on here understand how much of an advantage Mckenzie Dern would have going into her fight. She competes in 115 pounds weight class with 1 pound extra allowance. She weighed in at 123 pounds, so she actually weighed in with 8 pounds extra than her scheduled weight, with one extra pounds in there.
To put this into perspective, Yair recently reported got caught caught refusing to fight Lamas and Zabit, who competes in 145 pounds weight classes. If UFC allowed Yair to weigh in at 155 pounds at the weigh in, while Zabit and Lamas had to cut 145 pounds, then it would have been whole different story, because that's the same weight percentage advantage that Dern would have going into this fight.
On top of it, it doesn't look like Dern actually gave a fuck about making a weight, because if you did, you can't possibly come so much higher than the scheduled weight limit, so she isn't going to be drained either.
If you care about WMMA, I don't, but from the glimpse I had, there's not a whole lot of finishes, especially standing up, because they don't really have a whole lot of power, let alone at a weight class of 115 pounds.
So, on one hand, we have a fighter with a HUGE weight advantage, with no cardio effect from a weight cut, which cannot be said for the other fighter, with HUGH BJJ advantage, in a weight class where even for men there wouldn't be a high likelihood of knock outs, let alone for WMMA, fighting in her 'home' country..
Give Yair a call right now Dana, and let him know you are fine with him weighing at fucking 155 pounds for featherweights too. I doubt Yair would have two second thoughts about coming back to sign the dots.
