im really struggling at the minute to hold the pads firmly for punches. For kicks and knees I'm fine, but the guy I'm holding pads for always asks for me to put more resistance up for punches. I only started holding pads for others this week so am pretty new and everyone at my gym is very encouraging and no one has got angry, but I want to improve so that people will enjoy pad work with me more so in the future if I want I could ask for half an hour on the pads with someone and they would accept!

Does anyone have any tips on putting feedback into the pads for punches? I think I struggle with timing their punches, hence either putting force in too late or too early.

Guess this is common for beginners so is there any tips you guys have?

You don't want to have the pads too far or too close to the guy...it's not fun when you are doing padwork and your holder jams you or has you overextend on punches.

Try to keep the pads close to your head...it's supposed to simulate hitting a person's head. Pretty annoying when a dude is holding for you and his hands are out wide like he's being crucified or something lol.

You're essentially doing the reverse of their combo...except you let them do most of the movement. You will have to meet them with the pads (very slightly) to have the right amount of resistance for the guy hitting pads. The amount of resistance will vary, depending on who is hitting pads.
