Punching the opponent's chest? How does it work as a strategy?

Might cause someone to instinctively try to block it, thus opening up the head?

It can work for a variety of reasons. In sparring I've been caught upstairs after lowering a hand to parry the chest punch. I'm guessing if you get hit hard enough in the sternum it could be effective as well, although I've never seen this.
And of course if you get hit in the plexus you'll be totally screwed..

Put one into the chest to make the opponent plant their feet or move backward, potentially drop their hands, fire off another to the head.

It's more of a disruptive punch, imo.

Much like a push kick I assume it's used as a momentum stopper, or a breath botherer/wind taker, a stiff punch to the chest hinders your own ability to counter cleanly. I can see those with longer reaches using that punch technique more effectively.

Sounds like you should not have been allowed to breed and you have long existing brain trauma. Good luck with both of those.
If somebody is talking about brain injuries they've personally had and their own family life, you need to be a little more respectful when you reply.

If done correctly you can punch a real hole in your opponent's chest.

Johnson was clearly trying to implement Pai Mei's 5 point exploding heart technique. Quite simply, the deadliest blow in all of martial arts.

There were 2 problems with it in this fight though.

1) Johnson obviously did not learn the move directly under Pai Me's tutelage, so he had neither the speed or hand strength to land the blow effectively. One of the disadvantages of Youtube learning.

2) He attempted the move far too early in the fight. It is far better to attempt the move when your opponent is either extremely fatigued, or as you see below, when they are simultaneously completely unaware and also a complete pussy.

Notice the opponent is also using the crane technique. With both his arms raised to shoulder level. While the crane technique does have certain cosmetic advantages, one of it's criticisms is that it leaves your entire body completely exposed to attack at all times. Khabibs Russian Bear technique would make the blow much harder to land.

Yes, if in the center. There are a ton of nerves there that do a lot of work.

I remember reading a breakdown of JDS vs Cain I and JDS threw a few punches to the body, then faked to the body and went to the head and KO'd Cain because Cain was protecting his body - he dropped his hands.

Could be something like that

Control distance, slow an advance, body punch and possible head punch if the opponent lowers his head.

The chest is a big target and much harder to miss. You can disrupt breathing, balance, and even blood flow if you punch the heart(blood flow effects oxygen circulation, obviously). Underutilized tactic, imo, especially against a mobile opponent with good head movement.

you are told to aim for the chest sometimes because the coach sees that will get you a better chance of scoring to the head or chin

Robert S. Johnson was a boxer in the air core during WWII and he punched a huge guy in the chest right at the beginning of the boxing match and the guy dropped like he was dead and got up woozy and puked.

Then he got into his P47 and well...........you know.

I am working with my son on counter punching in the Dojo right now, my solar plexus is so bruised I am having problems with balance, I have a brain injury and use my core to walk properly. Seems when the core is damaged like mine is now, it makes my balance centers poor. He is 8 and hits like a mule, but still no pro, i imagine a pro targeting the same spot would cause far worse damage, it has really slowed me down.
@PrideJitZoo confirmed

You gotta concave the whole torso with hard ass jump kicks and try to bruise the neck meat.

Everybodys doing it now!

I don't know boxing but I do know that 'the mighty atom' Jimmy Wilde liked to throw punches right under the heart.
