Pug's next Adventure : Laos - Update

Guess I’ll have to buck the trend: I have been to Laos. Honestly, I loved it.

In the summer of 2007 I backpacked through Southeast Asia for three months, visiting Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, then back to Thailand, then Malaysia and Singapore. Laos was my favourite.

While there I visited the towns/cities of Luang Namtha, Muang Sing, Luang Prabang, Oudom Xai, Vang Vieng and Vientiane.

What would you like to know?

I was in Laos a couple years ago, and had a great time there.

Luang Prabang is very picturesque, a couple of nice waterfalls around the area, is an easy little town to walk, and can do cool little local tours. Really, a great place to walk around in. The bars close early, all of them in town close at midnight or before, and everyone goes to a bowling alley after (no joke, legit bowling alley) and parties their face off while bowling and chilling til 4am. Is quite fun, I recommend.

Vang Vieng is tamed down from its wild days before, but there are at least 2-3 bars open on the river everyday, and it is still a lot of fun to tube down. The people you meet there are awesome, there are hot girls, and it's easy to get laid. I didn't sleep much in Vang Vieng, partied all night, and chilled all day...there are bars where you can get weed, shrooms, whatever, and most of the chill bars play Friends on TV all day and you can just relax. Sakura bar will give you a t-shirt everytime you buy 2 vodka (or maybe all) mixed drinks, there are a ton of South Koreans there and really, it's a good vibe. Then, one of two after hours places will open depending on the night and you can stay out late. Another easy to walk around in town, lots of little hostels...and lots of travelers.

Vientine was a city that I didn't spend much time in, but just went to the night markets to sample local dishes and the Buddah Park, which actually has some pretty fucking cool statues.

I didn't do this because I ran out of time, but surely I'll do it someday: The Thaetek Loop, which is in Southern Loas is a motorcycle trip (can just rent a scooter for cheap and do it) that's about 500km long with a ton of shit to do in between. A bunch of my friends have done it and said they loved it, sooo...I would recommend if you have time.

The food isn't as good as in Vietnam or Thailand but it's not terrible either. If you have any other questions, shoot.

Cool info. I won't have time to do motorcycle trip you're taking about since I'm only there for 7 days.

I've seen Sakura Bar and Viva Pub being mentioned quite a bit in my research. Have been to the bars where they sell shrooms? I'm wondering if I can go to any bar and they have it on the menu. I'd worried about cops since I know it's technically illegal.

How is the area around Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang? You can rent a motorbike and just explore right?

I guess my most pressing concern is transportation. I assume the taxis and tuk tuks will try to rip you off. Was it easy to get to and from the airports and bus stations? How were the rides from one city to another?

I ended up buying a flight from Luang Prabang to Vientiane because I didn't want to miss my flight and I wanted some time to explore the city.

there are a ton of South Koreans there

I'm going there to get away from Koreans.

What nationality did you see the most of? I'm expecting to see a bunch of European backpackers. Hoping to meet some Spanish chicks and put my studying into practice.

Been thinking about stopping by there for my visa run (living in Chiang mai) but decided on Japan instead.

Lemme know how it do.

I went in July which is the low tourism season. When I was in Luang Namtha, Muang Sing and Oudom Xai I practically was the only white person. I remember going on a guided jungle trek in Muang Sing and the only other people on it were this retired couple from France in their late sixties and their granddaughter who was about 14 years old. They didn’t speak any English and kept trying to speak French to the locals. I think they were operating under a presumption that French was still widely spoken in Laos as it used to be part of French Indochina along with Vietnam and Cambodia, which it isn’t. Being Canadian I have some minimal French so I had to help translate.

Luang Prabang is very quaint and relaxing. If you go try to check out the Kuang Si falls and go for a swim. Luang Prabang is hard to describe, but it’s lovely. It’s like if South East Asia tried to do a small mountain town along the lines of Banff or Aspen.

When I went to Vang Vieng I think it must have still been in full swing and not slowed down because they had the tubing from one tree house bar to another and there were at least a dozen you could go to. They must have scaled it back due to fatalities because conceptually its very dangerous, especially when I was there during the rainy season. In the dry season it’s supposed to take a couple of hours to float from the drop off point to the last bar. In the rainy season it only takes half an hour. If you’re drunk out of your mind obviously it is very dangerous.

Vientiane is the only place that actually felt like a “city” but even then it’s small, like a quarter million people or so, and no big buildings to speak of. I really only went there in order to catch a flight to Hanoi.

Transportation from one town to another is slow. Taking a bus from Muang Sing to Luang Prabang took two full days to basically travel 200km. Ridiculous, but the topography is all jungle covered mountains. I never flew other than from Vientiane to Hanoi on Vietnam airlines. I had heard that Laos airlines had a poor safety record and I wasn’t interested in dying in a crash in the jungle so I never even considered flying between cities within Laos.

I never made it to the south part of Laos. I was cautioned that it wasn’t as safe, that land mines and other unexplored ordinance was a real problem all over the country side. But there’s a place in south Laos called Four Thousand Islands that I didn’t make it to that I heard is great.

Why did I love Laos the most of all the countries in SE Asia that I visited?

1. The people are genuinely friendly. Everyone in Thailand is friendly, but I don’t think it’s genuine at all. The Thai people are friendly the same way that the locals are friendly in tourist hot spots in Mexico. They just want you to spend your money on them. In Laos it seems more “from the heart”, it’s not a fake smile to get you to lower your guard and open your wallet.

2. It’s exotic. I rented a bike in Luang Namtha and explored the area outside of town. It’s all bamboo huts and rice paddies. In town, you’ve got chickens and hogs freely roaming. It’s like something out of national geographic. There’s nothing modern about it at all. The county doesn’t even have street lights, so it’s very dark wondering around at night, you have to be careful where you walk.

3. It’s more off the beaten path. Everybody and their Lady Boy friend has been to Bangkok, Phucket or Ko Samui. Not as many people go to Laos. It’s the true “adventure”. The only place that would probably give it a run for it’s money would be Myanmar which I regret not visiting when I had the chance.

I'm going to the Philippines in March and possibly somewhere else. I'll think about Laos

The bars that sell the shrooms in Vang Vieng are easy enough to find, you won't need to search too hard. Just ask any backpacker. I stayed in a dorm right beside the Sakura bar so it was where I went after rafting most of the time. It was a great place to start off the night. Honestly, Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang are super easy to explore walking, and the tuk tuks don't cost much at all. I didn't even rent a bike around that areas.

To get between Luang Prabang and Vang VIeng, I took a minibus. It's not a fun ride as it's bumpy and the bus is packed...it goes through dirt roads and shit but I'm good with that kinda thing and just slept pretty much the whole time. Bus station in Luang Prabang and in Vang Vieng is walkable from pretty much anywhere you need to go, and as I said, the taxis ain't bad.

Go to Vang Vieng first then, bus up to Luang Prabang and then take your flight...Vientine is not that great anyways, and there isn't a ton to do. But check out the Buddah park if you like old carvings and statues.

You will see a ton of European backpackers, but they're fun. Canadians and Americans too. I didn't meet all too many Spanish/South American backpackers but there are a few.

I can't believe this motherfucker's telling jokes at a funeral.

Aren't there a lot of unexploded bombs there? Bourdain went there and said there were millions of them if I'm not mistaken.

There are, but more in Cambodia I think.

Regardless, if you see a little thing that looks kinda like a clay pot on the ground, best don't pick it up.

There are, but it’s all in the South part of the country. If you look at this map, if you note the magenta coloured area in the centre, the area to the right of it, the skinny part, is where all the unexploded ordinance is located. All the touristy places and major population centres are in the part to the left of the magenta coloured area.

Edit: this map shows where the county was bombed by the US during the Vietnam War. The unexploded ordinance pretty much correlates to the same areas

If I was in your shoes elephant village in Luang Prabang would be a definite.

I prefer Laos over Thailand and Vietnam. More laid back.

You did good by choosing the plane ride back to Vientiane.

I guess none of my sherbros have been to Laos.
So currently, my plans look like this:
sleep overnight at Vientiane
Head to Vang Vieng in the morning.
Stay three days in Vang Vieng and engage in an assortment of activities such as trekking, ziplining, biking, exploring caves, drugs, and booze.
Then head to Luang Prabang to check out temples, waterfalls, and relax by the Mekong for another three days. I mostly want to eat local food and get some cheap massages (not the kind most of you are thinking).
Head back to Vientiane on the last day and explore the city before my flight which is at night. Even though a bus from LP to Vientiane is supposed to take 8-12 hours, I read it could take up to 20 hours depending on road conditions and the bus driver's discretion. Even if I take the earliest bus, I could still potentially miss my flight back home. I think I'll just pay extra for a flight which takes 40 minutes.

My flight is tomorrow and I am quite excited. It seems it will also be the least developed country I've ever been to. I'm looking forward to the heat but adjusting to the weather is going to an ordeal. It's 8 degrees Celsius in my town today while in Laos it's like 31.
Hopefully those activities will be kept separate. Enjoy your adventure!

Their women are tiny and if you date one in high school you can dissapoint your Vietnam Vet Father. This is all I know.

Good news for you is you will finally be taller than most over there

I did! Good call on that. Had a great experience. Elephants are majestic creatures.

Haha yes but not all. Tubing comes with alcohol. I got pretty wasted but it was at the end when we were about to leave.

Good news for you is you will finally be taller than most over there
Yep. Laotians are not a big people. But I mostly hung out with European backpackers who made me feel even smaller than I usually do.

@Pugilistic i thought you said in the backpacking thread that you did a long and detailed update? I don’t see anything

<{vega}>

The OP mate! I can't believe I wrote so much. I also have another several pages about my mushroom trip but I'll post that only if people want it.
