Last night was not a split decision but has added to the spotlight of fighters missing weight, potentially to gain an advantage over their opponents. a rule where fighters who miss weight would lose a split decision regardless would make them think about missing weight to gain a slight advantage over their opponent.

If you wanted to implement something like that, wouldn't it make more sense for the ref to deduct a point at the start of the fight? I think the punishment avenue should be explored, but I think the judges have too much influence as it is.

I was going to say the person that makes weight gets to carry a brass knuckle for the amount of minute the person missed weight but your idea works too.

Kind of out there, but I agree with this. Take out the split decision thing, and make it all decisions. A fighter that misses weight has to finish or they lose, no using size advantage to control position and win by points. Basically, by missing weight you automatically can't score above an 8 in any round.

Don't see it... but something needs to happen. Also. Guess 30% needs to be increased. These guys have found an advantage that you don't get suspended for....

The fight should be cancelled, the one who did make weight should get their full purse, and one who didn't make weight should be fined.

If you miss weight you have to OD on laxatives before the fight. That'd teach em!

If the fighter who missed weight is over a pound over the fight should be canceled and the guy who made weight should get his win $$$. It puts the fighter who made weight in a shitty position where he has to take a fight where his opponent has an advantage over him because otherwise his reputation may be tarnished for “being a bitch”.

But we (the fans and the orgs) don't want to have fights cancelled entirely due to missed weight
Im sure most fighters dont want to cancel either

Hypertonic bitterness and the extreme bias of being reasonless.

Just permanently force up if it happens again.

That would be fair for the fighters at first glance, but really fucks over the fans. And if it's a fighter that is a headliner of a PPV that misses, canceling the fight lowers the ppv buys and fucks over any fighters that are getting ppv points. And events getting less ppv buys will lower every fighters overall salary.

M-1 uses this

Don't agree. Makes it hinge on the already wildly inconsistent judging still. Point deductions based on weight missed is the only thing I can think of but even that isn't a actual guarantee of punishment if the larger guy just gets a finish. Missing weight should be a guaranteed loss of a point at the start of Rd 1. Before the fight is started have the ref bring the overweight fighter to the center for the usual 1 pt deduction dance as if he fouled his opponent then start the fight. Maybe deduct further points for every half lb or lb they've missed past the first as well. So in tills case. He would have been down 3 pts as he came in very overweight.

Seems harsh obviously but need something to make it a strict disadvantage to miss weight instead of just loss of cash and struggling with how you feel.

i think that it'd be more rational that, other the % fine, promotions could low the base salary for the next x matches.

that would be a practical way to implement this idea without a major change in the rules.

i agree that the 30% financial hit is proving to not be enough. probably because most of these guys are forced to find outside income because UFC pay in general not that great. it is possible that some fighters would be OK with 100% pay loss from the UFC if they win their fight and maintain their endorsements or gym revenues from being a successful UFC fighter.

Just permanently force up if it happens again.

this is the ideal situation but would be hard to implement. a fighter who misses weight by 1 lb might not need to move up(if they have a legitimate medical reason for missing the cut) but missing by 4 or more should be a forced move up. that would be hard to stomach though for many fighters.

As much as Till didn't make weight.. Nothing would have helped that snoozefest.

I don't think judging has been wildly inconsistent. There are bad decisions, but they are generally in close fights and in the kind of fights that lend themselves to bad decisions, ie, yesterday's point-fighting extravanganza.
