Prom is racist you guys

There will always be mentally challenged individuals that feed from attention and extrapolating minor events and apply them on a broader perspective to emboldened victim olympics but it is a sad state of affairs when major news-channels give them an outlet.

Based on the age of the prom tradition I'm sure racism is involved somewhere.

Yeah. It's on the front page of cnn.com. Sad

Stop giving ridiculous ideas attention. Attention is craved and can generate wealth for those who get it.

Flip-side---- This is from CNN, so the damage from attention is already done, sadly. Media is in trouble.

She didn't say prom is racist.

It literally says it in the title.
No, it literally says it's a reflection of our (racist) reality. That doesn't mean that prom is a racist practice; it means that racist stuff in society will be reflected in current day prom culture. There's a nuance there that's apparently lost here.

It's not even what she's arguing. She wants to say that racist people approach prom in a racist way ( "Do u wanna be like a n----- and hang at PROM?") and it's making it a more divisive event. She's not at all being unreasonable. You don't have to agree with her, but jeez people here are such drama queens. Whenever they perceive something as being PC they go all out with the hyperboles and misquotations.

She basically described most high schools. I don't think it's a shock to anyone that kids today continue to do stupid, insensitive stuff that they decide to post online to cause drama or get some attention.

There's no shortage of ways that proms have been impacted by the same prejudices that mar society at large. Instances of segregation, homophobia, and racism have, for many students, tarnished the occasion.

I'd imagine this doesn't just "tarnish" prom . . . it's pretty much the norm for many in high school around the country.

Just recently, Nordstrom Rack apologized to African-American teenagers who were falsely accused of stealing from a store where they were shopping for shirts for prom.

I see both sides of something like this . . . good kids get accused of doing bad things based on looks and the historical actions of others. But then there are those who actually do something like this to try and get away with it, but cry foul when busted. All because of what they look like.

Even before the actual dance, there's the flood of what have come to be known as "promposals" -- the carefully planned invitations meant to guarantee an acceptance. Similar to the marriage proposals on which they are modeled, most of these involve flowers, favorite foods, elaborate signs and costumes, and maybe a strategically employed horse-drawn carriage.

Whoever started "promposals" should be taken out back and beaten . . . dumbest thing ever.

Can't be the only one that read and entered the thread thinking it was porn?

Yes, I would say it's a reflection of high school culture (or a condensation of it). This will attract the anti-pc outrage squad and I will be called an SJW just for pointing out that she didn't say prom is inherently racist. Thought crime.

The thing is she literally takes 3 events that didn't even happen in the same year and then says "we are all racist! Look at us doing this despicable stuff!" How many millions of "promposals" didn't involve anything with race? Yeah that kid who dressed up in blackface, he's probably a racist piece of shit. That doesn't make everyone else one too.

She didn't say it makes everyone a racist, lol. I think you're getting worked up over something small.

There would be no point to the article if she wasn't trying to pull a bigger message from these stories. She is saying these dumb kids are a reflection of us as a society. Also this being on the front page of cnn means it's meant to tell us as a nation we are racist.

I lol’d at “current day prom culture”. Sounds like a great new SJW boogie man
