Progressive Martial Arts Academy

I wish gyms would openly admit to the costs of service. I Have no clue what my BJJ/MT and Judo/Others are priced at. Free lessons ftw.

I trained there for 6 months under Rob in the BJJ classes. The instruction is top notch. Rob is a Gracie black belt, and is on close terms with Renzo, so you are getting real Gracie BJJ instruction there. Yes the prices are really steep, especially in this economy. Guro Nick and Kathy, the owners are really nice people ,and they keep a nice, clean, state of the art faciluty. They sink a lot of money into constantly upgrading the training equipment, and they have probably all the same things that Extreme Couture would have. The faciluty is small tho, and classes can be cramped at night, and parking is difficult to find during the day. You can have as many as 5 classes per week, and the gym is open, but not on sundays, and not after 10pm, so for $1200 for 6 months, the price point is really tough to swallow. They don't actually have any free weights, aside from kettle bells. The problem is that real estate prices are very high in this area, and that accounts also for the high cost off tuition and very limited parking.

The demographic of students there are mainly upper middle class working families, who attend classes maybe twice per week. This is the type of school for people who have money to spend. The difference between this school, and the San Da school I trained at in Qingdao, are night and day. I mean PMAJKD has everything, but it will cost you. If you are trying to afford this school on a budget, you most likley won't be able to. But if you or your family have money, then it is a great school. If I weren't currently unemployed, then I would probably go back.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I've been thinking of going here for a while now. I was just about to schedule a trial , (I go to school at queensborough which is nearby, and also work in the area) but I hate being put on the spot to sign right now or else it will cost more tomorrow. Honestly 200 a month I can swing, but do I really have to pay for the classes in addition to the 200 a month. That is a dealbreaker for me. I tried Tiger Shulmans (insert laughter here :icon_cry2) cause it was close to where I lived, but that was a joke. I want to train hard, and really get into it, I just need a serious place that is somewhat affordable. Manhattan is out of the question traffic can be a nightmare, and Im done ridin trains. Anyone who trains or has trained here can you PM me if you dont want to open post, but I'm looking to get into a gym within the next 2-3 weeks.

I been training at PMA for almost two years now...here is a quick run down...Yes the PRICE is STEEP...I pay $230 a month for the MMA Program which is Muay Thai/BJJ & CSW classes...the $230 is a set price for unlimited classes each month...I Usually end up doing 2 Muay Thai Classes,2 BJJ Classes and 1 MMA Class each week...So I do about 20 classes per month...There is ZERO options in Queens...This is the one and only LEGIT place..,

Rob G teaches BJJ and is a Black Belt under Renzo...a real deal Black Belt...the guy is a beast trust me and is an EXCELLENT teacher...he is very intricate and detailed...To me he is worth the price alone...class is usually an Hour and 15 minutes...Id say its about an hour of drilling technique and 15-20 mins of rolling afterwards...he also hosts a few tournaments yearly...This class is GI and NO GI...I mostly do No GI...Sometimes GI...There is a ton of great guys to roll with Black Belts,Brown Belts,Purple Belts and some very good Blue Belts...some wrestlers are also in the mix

The Muay Thai and MMA Program is Headed Under Eric Ruiz who is also a Pro Muay Thai and MMA Fighter and a Brown Belt under Rob G...He is an excellent trainer also, very very knowledgeable...Muay Thai class is divided into 2 classes...Level 1 and Level 2....Level 1 is for guys who are still learning technique and with not much experience...so its alot of pad work, kick shields and circuit training...Level 2 is for more advanced guys...it also includes lots of hard sparring...they actually let you determine if your ready for Level 2...alot of guys thought they were and went back down to Level 1...Class is usually an hour long...Eric is a hell of a coach tho

The MMA Program is also led by Eric who is a certified Erik Paulson instructor in CSW(Combat Submission Wrestling)...This is my favorite class and its only once a week on saturday...Its combines everything you learned...about 40 minutes of class is drilling Standup,Ground and Pound,Wrestling,Clinch,BJJ etc and then 20 mins of pretty hard sparring...Eric is an excellent MMA coach and has 6 or 7 Pro fights under his belt

As far as the intangibles...there is really no weight room...We have a shitload of Russian Kettlebells which I use daily...the explosion I got from RKB training I cant say enough...We have free weights like adjustable dumbells,Medicine Balls.Plyo boxes, threadmills, bikes, resistance bands and some other cool equipment...

In closing My only complaint is the price which like I said is STEEP...I had to cut some serious corners to afford this...but the Trainers Rob G and Eric Ruiz are TOP NOTCH...I only had a boxing background and they brought my game to a whole new level...I have won 4 Submission Grappling Tournaments in the past 2 years and im making My Amateur MMA debut in October

Thanks alot Shogun. Thats exactly what I was looking for. The price isnt to steep IMO. Works out to a lil more than 50 a week, if your taking 5 classes a week that like 10 bucks a class. Im going to set up a visit for next week. Thanks again.

I trained at progessive for 6 months and here is the run down.

Pros:
1)Sifu Nick is a great guy and very personable. He brings alot of knowledge and is always willing to help. Definitly a guy I would like to learn from.
2) Great space to train and they have all the necessary equipment.
3) Very clean and great front desk staff.
4) All students are respectful and nice
5) Saif Waryah is a friendly person and is always involved in class with all the students. Good guy to learn from. He is going to be a great instuctor one day.

Cons:
1) Am going to start with the Thai boxing. Eric clearly has a lot of knowledge about his choosen sport, but I think his priorities are misplaced. When you teach a class your attention should be on all the students in the class and not on a selected few. Everyone has PAYED and come to LEARN. And not just go through the motions while he trains his selected fighter. This just my observations.

2)ROB G. It goes without saying that this guy knows his choosen sports but his mind needs to be on the class at hand and not correcting his son's math homework during class. You think am kidding am not. Also leaving the classroom while in session to look at high school girls is not just disrespectful to the students but to the women in the class also.

3) overpriced at 1300 for 6 months for both the thai boxing & BJJ.

The following is of course just my opinion, but I did have 6 months to form it. Take it for what it is worth.
