History...

Progressive Martial Arts was founded and established in 1995 by Sifu Nick Sacoulas. After years of training and teaching, Sifu Nick decided to open up his own school in order to further his own development and create a teaching environment for his students. Inspired by his own teachers, Sifu Nick had a vision of a school that would best perpetuate the arts that were passed down to him. Since PMA

i want to scream McDojo just because of how it looks but theres alot of LEGIT written all over it at th esame time... help.

It looks like a really nice set up. Not my type of gym at all, esp for the price, but if that's your bag (JKD, Kali) you can't get much better.

i do prefer standup, but its BJJ package is quite tempting as well, along with MT integration and Kali.

Kali has always been interesting to me as well hmm.

So you gotta pay $200 and then PAY MORE for the classes?

Honestly, I'm sure it's a great school and all, but fuck that.

For month-to-month for all access to Xtreme Couture it's $165 I think.

true. its rediculously expensive.

They say its to pay for equipment use during open gym hours, as the facility doubles as a weight room i guess.

its like paying to workout and then paying for a personal trainer. ugh...

money is always an issue huh? its a tempting program though. sigh.

For me personally, I like gyms that are gyms. If I want to hang out and watch satellite or play on the internet, I'll do that at home (or work).

When I train, I like to go in, get down to bidness, and then get on with my day.

Like I said though, if you're into Kali and such, there is probably no better place in the US to go then there. But paying that much just for access to a a bunch of non-essential amenities to me is crazy.

See if you can get a free day pass and see if you like it. And if you do go there, bump this thread and let me know.

FTR, I trained under that "style" (PFS) years ago and really enjoyed it.

Nick is a good guy and has a wealth of martial arts knowledge. The gym is top notch best in the Queens area. I understand if $200 is a bit much but it is New York and the training you get is well worth it.
And by the way Nick has Guro Dan in every year and Nubreed Martial Arts (about a mile away) has him as well once a year. So you can catch Guro when you return.

Sounds like a plan, i was hoping to beable to catch the Dan Inosanto be it seems like thats an impossibility as i dont get to leave prior to april.

Due to the the level of the Instructors i cant say McDojo, but the pricing is what gets to me.

Sure its New York, with crazy price gouging and everything just for rent.

And the Open gym kinda coincides with the need for a weightroom, as there is no gym closer to where i live then PMA, plus its a Martial Arts Academy at that too, sigh. Will look into it toward mid-April and see what its like, will bump from there about it.

except for nubreed in north queens which offers all the same stuff for the same price

So any updates on actual class prices and how the classes are like?

I don't care if they brought in a psychic and let you communicate with Bruce Lee once a year , $200 a month is a fuckload of money and not worth it in my opinion.

There must be a better cheaper alternative somewhere in the area.

Lmao, you're right about that first part. It seems like a steep fucking price when you add in that you have to pay extra for all the classes you want. It seems to me like it's $200 a month for a glorified 24 Hour Fitness.

The TS said that there are no other alternatives nearby.

Yeah, I actually spent a few minutes looking on google to see what I could find in terms of quality gyms in that area and their doesn't seem to be anything nearby .

I found that hard to believe at first but that is how it looks.

That is crazy , I figured New York would be crawling with good places to train the way California is .

In that case if I was the thread starter I would probably end up going to that academy , but I would be bummed out & somewhat pissed at the price gouging.

I had a free tryout with them once when I was looking for a gym. The Muay Thai instructor(Eric) was very nice and knowledgeable. I was turned away from the prices plus the pressure they put on me to join. After my tryout they told me if I didn't sign up now I would have to pay the registration fee, which was like $75 I think, if I signed up now they would waive it. Which is complete bs. I know they have 6 month and 12 month contracts but alot of places have that. It's definately not a McDojo and has some excellent instructors. They got a legit BJJ black belt and Muay Thai instructor. If that's your only option and you got the money I would go but look around to see if there's anything cheaper. There's more gyms in the city, not alot in queens.

Anyone have any intel on NUBREED?

Dude fuck that noise. My family is from upstate and I've never been to the burrows so forgive my ignorance, but how long would it take you to get to Manhattan? I think people at Renzo Gracie Academy are only paying around $250 per month for total access, and come on, does instruction get much better than that? Always beware of gyms that charge way to much, cause they're probably charging you for B.S.. Like out here we have Trevor Wittmans club T'sko: the dude helps train guys like Duane Ludwig, Nate Marquardt, Shane Carwin and Eliot Marshall on a regular basis and even has Georges St. Pierre, Rashad Evans and Keith Jardine seeking him out and he charges a fraction of what other gyms in the area do.

Queens to Mannhattan can take as little as 35 minutes, upward to 2 hours depending on how and when you travel between boroughs. Location is important when you work full time. If you're a student or unemployed, I don't know how one can afford $200 a month. Based on reviews here and elsewhere, PMA looks real good and if they offering EVERYTHING you're looking for, go for it. If you don't mind an hour on the subway, go to the city, there are lots of options ranging from several quality BJJ schools, MMA, MT, to Russian Arts to FMA!

They have a location in OC California. I fought two of their kids. Their instructor here in OC seemed like a nice guy. I am pretty sure he was a kickboxing guy. I'll post the video if you care to see what their kids look like.
