Prime Tyron vs Khabib

Maybe, but roided Tibau sure looked like a full-sized, full-strength WW. That said, this was Khabib's toughest fight so it's hard to say. But if Woodley couldn't get a KO, would he be willing to grapple extensively? Wrestling is one thing, but if anyone gets a submission, it would be Khabib. It's a hard fight to call, as are all hypothetical fights where someone moves up/down a weight class. Lots of unknowns. But I do think Usman and Colby's much more active styles would be tougher for Khabib than Woodley, whose main threat is a KO shot. Even if he had some success wrestling, I can't see Woodley following that strategy for 5 rounds. He's always had a low work rate and tried to conserve his energy.

2020 Khabib >>> 2012 Khabib. That being said I think the fight looks a lot like this one since Tyron was also quite trigger shy during most of his reign(but he wasn't always and it's hard for me to say when it started and which Tyron Khabib's fighting).

Tyron would gas trying to wrestle and strike with khabib, he just doesn't have the cardio or technique to be as efficient and effective as khabib.

Not to say Tyron couldn't ko him before that happens but we've all seen how Tyron started fighting .....

No one other than his mom has thought that he's unbeatable, he got KTFO by Marquardt in Strikeforce... He did look very good though when he won the belt and it was epic seeing him KTFO Lawler. It looked like he'd retain his title for a while which he did, but never has anyone thought that he would be unbeatable.

Woodley looks much larger than Khabib though so it's not really a fair fight in that sense. Khabib is hands down the LW GOAT and an exceptional fighter, but I think if he was a bit taller/thicker and fought in the WW division that he'd suffered some losses as the division has great wrestler who could avoid getting taken down.

Definitely a hard fight to call given that we never saw Khabib against a big ww like Tyron (although we did get to see Woodley worn out in the clinch so take that for what it’s worth) but I really don’t know who considered him to be nigh unbeatable. He never really had that aura.

Even in his prime Woodley would freeze up and remain gun shy. Khabib via UD.

Woodley is definitely a fighter who can get in his own head. Prime Woodley with his intact confidence that he IS the best I would pick to win by KO or most likely a decision, probably split

To be fair, Lawler started a massive downhill slide after the Tyron fight. His only wins since then were Cerrone (relatively close fight vs. an equally shopworn LW) and the ghost of Nick Diaz. I really think he was past his prime then...even in the Condit fight (just before that) both guys looked like it was their last semi-decent performance as they exited their primes.

Tyron was never impressive in his prime. Barely squeaking out against Thompson twice, beating a old Maia and a Green Till.
Tyron folds under pressure and Khabibs pressure is godly. Easy fight for Khabib.

For me the only WW that would give Khabib trouble is Usman. The rest are easy money.

Tibau was a scrub at 170 and shut Khabibs entire game down.

The WW wrestlers ALL beat him---Marty, Colby, T-Wood, and Askren. Maia beats him too...probly Gunnar Nelson as well

Khabib went on record saying Tyron Woodley was too big for him.

Tyrone Woodley would be the biggest, strongest opponent that Khabib has ever fought in mma.

Khabib has never tested himself in another weight class in the UFC like Cejudo, Cormier, GSP, or Anderson Silva.
He rolls with Rockhold and DC, Woodley wouldn't be an issue.

Khabib via anything he wants. Talk about a a nightmare matchup for tyron

You are correct that he's never tested himself at WW in the UFC (which I wish he did), but even though hearsay, I read that he would toss around LHWs in the gym wrestling and also bears.

Would have been fun to see a Woodley (prime) or GSP (prime) fight with Khabib.

Interesting bout. I could see it going either way. Gun to my head I'd favor Khabib, but only by the absolute smallest of margins. In his prime Tyron had strong hips and a great base for stuffing takedowns, especially against the fence. As much as I hate referencing the Tibau fight as it was early in Khabib's career and development, I could see Woodley posing many of the same issues that Gleison did. Al also had a solid defensive grappling showing without posing anywhere near the same knockout threat that Woodley does.

There are a few issues, though. The first, I think, is whether Woodley will be able to keep himself from getting outpointed on the feet and in clinch exchanges even if he can defend the shots (to say nothing of the threat of trips/sweeps he may be less prepared for). His output has never been great and Khabib is not a guy I see routinely falling for an all-or-nothing overhand right. Then there's the issue of Woodley's cardio. And if it does get to the mat, can he get back up without risking a sub?

That being said, Khabib is always going to be at risk entering the trenches against the naturally bigger man and trying to impose his will -- especially once Woodley lets his hands go. I know Khabib has deceptively good defensive striking and a solid chin, but still. Prime Woodley would be a live dog.
