Prime Toney hand speed

Still looked slow next to Roy.

Toney was a great fighter but it wasn’t because of his hand speed. I’d say his hand speed was a little better than average of top level fighters.

Hand speed isn’t the same as head movement, positioning and timing. Plenty of people could land a lot of punches quickly, it was the ability to land them hard and flush that makes your name.

Like seano said, Roy was quicker and way more powerful with it.

Look at some of the lower weights and guys have much quicker hands, they are just less likely to make you eat through a straw for 6 weeks.

I've always found these multi weight guys so interesting and Toney is a boss as well.

He was pretty quick to pull off his shoulder round counter style that he adopted. I don't think the heavier guys had ever saw such hand speed which helped him.

But as people said at his natural middle/Super middle weight it wasn't anything extraordinary but still good.

Ayyy, I got more gifs too. Gonna do a HL video of him some day soon too

James Toney"s hand speed has to do allot with his Philly shoulder roll style, but he has fast hands, he's more of a timing counter puncher and throws straight combos off his shoulder roll, then hooks and body shots. So he has superior timing and counters then other fighters. Just like Floyd Mayweather, he also has superior timing along with quick hands, but his timing is his gift and counters off of his Philly shell, shoulder roll. But James Toney had an extremely quick powerful jab, that kept people honest and he even knocked someone down with it.

Now Roy has quick hooking / upper - cut speed, that's his gift, he's super quick with lightning fast combos, but leading with his hooks and other punches and countering fighters, but actually teeing off on fighters.

Toney has counter punching hand speed, or superior timing hand speed.

Roy has superior attacking hand speed, starting his attack with blistering quick combos and counter punching.
Roy Jones vs James Toney Highlights

It's two different types of hand speed.

James Toney"s weakness was his flat footwork and Michael Nunn took advantage of this and so did Roy, James wasn't slow but kinda dragged his footwork and due to his style, he stayed flatfooted to long in his fights, due to his Philly and Peek a boo Boxing counter punching style. Just bump into them when they are bobbing and weaving with their head down, this throws them off balance and then attack them.

But he could dance and attack using quick footwork, but gets caught in his defensive flatfooted footwork, while ducking and weaving, so he can counter you and knock you out. So Roy and Nunn, were using quick attacks with blistering speed, while using different angles and superior footwork, James never adjusted to this attack.

James Toney uses a mixture of boxing styles, the Philly shell, mixed with the peek a-boo style. You could see his Mike Tyson head movement, then counters using his Philly shell, while using attacks mixing from the Philly shell to the Swamer style of boxing, then using different angles to attack, while staying close to his opponents, fighting them in the pocket.

Notice Toney using Mike Tyson"s boxing style bobbing and weaving defense, then raising up and still using Mikes attacks, raising up throwing hooks.
