Prime Max Holloway vs Prime BJ Penn

Max has great TDD, but penn would be the bigger guy, and we're talking about the same penn that took down bigger guys like Fitch, serra, gomi etc etc. He had decent takedowns when he actually went for it. I still wouldn't favor him against max, though. @ExitLUPin 's summary of how the fight would play out is pretty much how I think it would play out, too.

Its really weird how some are viewing this fight. Max late TKO wouldnt be the most shocking this but most likely this goes to decision.

People are using fights where BJ got finished by 2 of the GOAT WWs including the GOAT WW in their prime (who were well north of 180lbs in cage) as proof of Max breaking and finishing him. Or taking beatings from Nick, Rory... who arent small WWs by any means and BJ won the 1st round in both those fights and won the 1st half of the Fitch fight too. Theres a reason Max cuts all that weight to fight at 145 and we saw him get drubbed around by Dustin @ 155 where there was a significant power disadvantage. And BJ would be the biggest puncher hes fought outside of maybe Dustin and weve seen BJ drop and KO WWs and MWs so its still a maybe.

And a peak GSP still needed BJ to quit on the stool at the END of the 4th after an assault on him. And you got dumbasses here thinking Max would get a finish by 2-3 lmaoooo and Hughes was a stuck in crucifix finish. Even one idiot posting records as if end of career losses compared to a fighter in their prime are accurate for anything specially since BJ actually tested himself far above his best weight many times unlike most MMA fighters specially todays fighters. And im saying all this is a massive Max stan too who didnt really care for BJ during his prime.

If Conor beat max on the ground max is in trouble

You actually believe Penn wouldn't manhandle Max to the ground if Max gave him problems on the feet? This fight would be domination by a prime Penn
You seriously underestimate Holloway's chances.
The fight would be competitive.

Bj
I don't see max surving a prime Penn. His grappling is better and his striking is pretty close to equal, except he has more power. The talent that guy possessed was wack

More like

Machida was a bloated up green karateka with only 4 fights under his belt, while BJ Penn had already won the LW & WW UFC belts. <{hughesimpress}>
BJ thought he could bully the much less experienced RYOTO, and got his ass whooped by the sumotori débutant.

Good win for Machida,
only damage he took was after the fight was already over
(I like to pretend it wasn't after the Kengo Watanabe bout)
Lol Inoki always seems like a tool to me.

People think Max would beat up BJ because BJ got beat up by a guy who did THIS at middleweight

and a guy who did THIS also at middleweight against Anderson,

,

people think he will dominate BJ?

The same guy who got beat the shit out of him at LW by

when he moved up?

Max arguably beat Volk in his last fight, and might end up as a FW goat eventually. But come on now,

prime for prime, without bad weight cut on either side, BJ by round 2, 3 RNC in one sided fight.
He also lost to FWs like Edgar and Jens Pulver, in his prime...

Max is a horrible matchup for BJ. It would look like Diaz vs BJ. Probably worse since Max throws like 10 shots per combo. Max wins convincingly./

Everyone picking Max clearly didn't watch BJ in his prime he would take Max down at will ala (Ludwig, Hughes, Fitch all 170lbers) we talking about one of the greatest grapplers of all time unfortunately GSP was just a lil better and bigger and that demolalized his all time greatness status along with retiring 5 years too late.

BJ by more complete game in his prime. Way heavier hands too, Max would stumble around like he did in the Poirier fight.

BJ would sleep Poirier too in two rounds.

Wtf happened after the fight was over for Machida to get smacked around like that?

He took down Jon Fitch and fought him to a draw ffs, just the other day there was a thread with a lot of people saying Fitch was one of the best guys in the ufc to never win a title.

BJ had a lot of embarrassing performances late in his career but people forget what kind of monster he was in his prime.

I could see BJ taking Holloway down and subbing him in the first two rounds, although Holloway has only lost like that one and that was when he was a kid. I equally could see Holloway surviving an early onslaught and taking over with superior cardio and volume striking in the later rounds and winning a decision. We'll never know for sure unfortunately.

BJ, despite his incredible skill in his time, is still one of the most overrated of all time.

Max drowns him after round round 2.
