Prime BJ vs Conor

Good matchup. Conor owns BJ on the feet but BJ's wrestling and top game would give Conor trouble. Prime BJ's chin was also nothing to fuck with.

Mendez is faster and Conor's knee was jacked going into that fight. He fought recklessly and opened himself up to the take down.

Huge is too slow and his standup is just too bad. Conor from Diaz 2, Alvarez will just nuke huge from the distance and TKO him eventually.

Probably not. But I'll defend your right to have an opinion. Not if you're a woman.

BJ by being better at everything if Conor tagged him he'd be taken down and choked out easily.

If it's motivated BJ, probably something like this:

Prime BJ was the shit... crisp boxing and slick BJJ.. but either way you look at it, it wouldn't be enough to handle that left hand from the notorious. Conor, by KO Rd 1.

Lol stop, BJ had never even been "tiddled" by a shot his whole career. No one can even name a point in his career where a shot badly wobbled him. Not even when his little ass was fighting huge WW's like Rory, Diaz, and GSP

Prime BJ wrecks everyone and would lick the blood off his gloves. Post-fight while they're going to the hospital he'll be at the bar having a beer.

In BJ Penn's prime he was a smooth boxer on top of being an expert in Brazilian jui-jitsu. Solid defense, excellent chin, he had the ability to pressure when need be. I got to see Penn fight live vs. GSP (their first encounter). I'll never forget, that was a damn good fight actually, bloody. Penn could strike, and he loved to fight.

Meanwhile with Conor McGregor, you've got a very similar thing in essence; he loves to fight. His skillset is quite different, in that, he is the better the striker, but the worse the ground fighter. Where Penn exceeds, McGregor doesn't focus anywhere near as much. Why would he? He's got the KO power. And great striking technique.

I think ultimately, McGregor would be able to nullify Penn's attempts to take him to the ground long enough to batter Penn. Not to say Penn wouldn't find success on the feet, but rather, I think McGregor wins the fight, and does so on the feet. Late stoppage or, more likely, a unanimous decision.

That's how I'd see it play out, who knows. Great fighters, both of them.

Reading through this thread and reading (reliving) peoples memories of ''Prime BJ" just makes me realize how far he's fallen..

I really hope he retires..

fair assessment.

Penn's wrestling was pretty underrated though. Remember he wrestled jon fitch / took him down multiple times.

Absolutely!

After posting, I had the afterthought that, well, should McGregor not do enough damage early... the first three rounds... really two and a half... Penn's odds go up a little. For me anyway. Because, he could very well pressure McGregor late to the floor, and finish him there. Or just control him.

It's a good matchup in terms of fantasy matchups because, both guys could concievably win, imho

Nate did and BJ has a iron chin also.
Chins can get cracked, ask Jose Aldo who also had an "iron chin" leading up to their fight. It's not more so that Conor's so powerful, it's that he's precise with his shots and times them well. he's a counter striker. He most likely would've done Penn the same way he did Aldo. yea people can say, "but Aldo was caught" or what not, yea he was caught, but that's a beautiful display of counter striking. I'm not saying a prime BJ would lose nor am I saying he would win, but putting him against someone like Conor... all of my money and then some would be on Conor all day everyday. just my opinion.
